The DVIR app High Point GPS deploys is the inspection feature of Geotab Drive, which replaces paper pre-trip and post-trip inspection forms on the driver's Android or iOS device. It is for fleets in Canada and the US that need a daily inspection record and a clear trail from a reported defect to a certified repair. Defects reach maintenance as soon as the driver submits them, and the repair is closed out in the same app.

## What is a DVIR app?

A DVIR app is a vehicle inspection app that replaces the paper Driver Vehicle Inspection Report. On the High Point GPS platform, inspections run in Geotab Drive: the driver opens the inspection on an Android or iOS phone or tablet, goes through the vehicle's defect list and submits the report before or after the trip.

A paper DVIR form often stays in the cab until someone thinks to collect it. In the app, a reported defect shows up in the platform right away and goes to whoever manages maintenance, so the shop hears about a problem the same day the driver finds it.

## What do Canadian and US inspection rules ask for?

In the US, a driver files a DVIR at the end of the day when they find a defect that could affect safe operation, and the next driver reviews it before driving. The carrier must repair the defect and certify the repair before the vehicle goes back on the road.

Canada's rules require a trip inspection before driving, valid for 24 hours, with a report and a schedule of major and minor defects, whether or not a defect is found. In Quebec, this inspection is called the ronde de sécurité. Both countries then expect the same chain: report, repair, certification.

## How does a pre-trip inspection work in the app?

The driver picks the vehicle, works through the defect list set up for it and marks anything wrong as a major or minor defect. The lists are custom, so a highway tractor, a cube van and a trailer can each have their own items instead of one generic form for the whole fleet.

If the last inspection flagged a defect, the driver sees it and certifies that previous inspection. Open major and minor defects have to be resolved before another inspection is done on that vehicle, which keeps a known problem from being skipped over on the next shift.

## How do defects get from the driver to maintenance?

When a driver reports a defect, the platform sends a notification, and mechanics are alerted that a repair is needed. The office also gets notified when an inspection is missed, so a skipped pre-trip comes to light before an auditor finds it.

Once the repair is done, it is marked as repaired. At the next login, the driver is prompted to certify the repair, which closes the loop from the driver's report to the mechanic's fix with a record for each step.

## What does the officer see at a roadside inspection?

At roadside, the driver can show previous inspections from the Asset Inspection tab in Geotab Drive. The officer sees the inspection history for that vehicle on the driver's screen, without the driver digging through a clipboard of paper forms.

Because inspections and hours-of-service logs sit in the same app, the driver handles both parts of a roadside check from one device and one login.

## How is the inspection app set up and supported?

Inspections run in the same Geotab Drive app drivers use for their ELD logs, so a fleet already using the ELD adds inspections without a second app. High Point GPS sets up the defect lists for your vehicle types and connects the alerts to the people who handle repairs.

Our Montreal team gives drivers, mechanics and office staff ongoing training and support in English and French. Inspection records then sit in the High Point GPS platform alongside GPS tracking and ELD data.

## FAQ

### What is a DVIR?

A DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) is the driver's written record of a vehicle inspection. In the US, a driver files one when they find a defect that could affect safe operation, and the next driver reviews it. Canada requires a trip inspection report every 24 hours. A DVIR app records it on a phone instead of a paper form.

### Is a vehicle inspection required every day in Canada?

Yes. Canada's rules require a trip inspection before driving, valid for 24 hours, with a report and a schedule of major and minor defects, even when no defect is found. In Quebec this inspection is the ronde de sécurité. In Geotab Drive, the driver completes it on a phone or tablet and the report goes straight to the platform.

### Can a DVIR app replace the paper DVIR form?

Yes. Fleets on the High Point GPS platform replace paper pre-trip and post-trip forms with the inspection in Geotab Drive. Each vehicle type gets its own custom defect list, defects are marked major or minor, and the report reaches the platform as soon as it is submitted, so nobody has to collect forms from the cab.

### What happens when a driver reports a major defect?

The platform sends a defect notification and mechanics are alerted that a repair is needed. The defect stays open until it is marked as repaired, and open major and minor defects have to be resolved before another inspection on that vehicle. At the next login, the driver is prompted to certify the repair.

### Can managers see when a driver skips an inspection?

Yes. Geotab Drive sends notifications for missed inspections as well as for reported defects. The office learns about a skipped pre-trip from the app instead of from an audit, so a supervisor can follow up with the driver before the vehicle runs another shift without an inspection on record.

### Do I need a separate app for inspections and ELD logs?

No. Inspections and hours-of-service logs both run in Geotab Drive, so drivers use one app and one login for both. At a roadside check, they can show their logs and their previous inspections from the same device. High Point GPS sets up both features together and supports them in English and French.
