IOX add-ons are Geotab expansion modules that plug into the IOX port on the GO device to add one specific function, such as auxiliary inputs for a PTO or a plow, NFC driver ID, refrigeration unit data, Bluetooth sensors or Iridium satellite coverage. They are for fleets that need one more data source in the platform without installing a second tracking system in the vehicle. Our Montreal team checks which module fits your vehicles and device model, installs it and confirms the data reaches the platform.

## What is an IOX add-on?

An IOX add-on is a small expansion module that connects to the IOX port on the side of a Geotab GO device. Each IOX does one job, such as reading a switch, identifying a driver or relaying data from a third-party controller, and the GO device detects the module and sends its data to the platform. On GO7 and newer devices, up to five IOX can be connected in a daisy chain, and the GO10 supports a combination of up to five.

Geotab requires professional installation for most modules, and IOX are not IP rated, so they go inside the cab or another sheltered spot, never outside the vehicle. High Point GPS checks each module's compatibility with your device model before recommending it, installs it with the GO device unplugged, and verifies that the module communicates once the work is done.

## How do you monitor a PTO with telematics?

A power take-off (PTO) runs equipment from the vehicle's engine, such as a dump body, a garbage truck's compactor or a truck-mounted carpet cleaning machine. Geotab notes that most trucks made in 1996 or later report PTO status through the engine computer, so the GO device can read data such as PTO engaged, PTO oil temperature and PTO fuel used without an extra module. What is available depends on the vehicle. That data also lets the platform separate idling for PTO work from unproductive idling.

Where the engine does not report the PTO, or for other equipment, the IOX-AUXM reads up to four on/off signals, and a second IOX-AUXM brings the total to eight. Geotab's input map puts the PTO on AUX1 for hi-rail trucks and on AUX4 for public works and telecom or utility trucks, next to inputs for cranes, booms, outriggers, compressors, doors and warning lights. The module learns each circuit type during installation, and Geotab requires the same input map on every vehicle in a fleet so the data stays comparable.

## Which IOX identifies the driver?

The IOX-NFCREADERA is an NFC reader that identifies who is driving each vehicle, so trips, safety events and reports are attributed to the right person. Drivers tap a Geotab NFC fob, an NFC sticker or a keyless NFC tag on the reader; its green LED flashes twice and the GO device beeps once when the tag is read.

Driver ID works with all GO7 and newer devices, and the keyless feature needs a GO9 or newer device. The reader is screwed in place, since Geotab says the supplied tape is not a permanent mount. It suits pooled or shared vehicles, where several drivers use the same truck and each trip needs a name on it.

## How do you monitor reefer temperature?

For refrigerated trucks and trailers, the IOX-COLD connects the GO device to the refrigeration unit's controller. On supported units it brings real-time temperature monitoring, custom alerts and reports, error code detection, remote setpoint adjustment, remote start and stop, and remote fault clearing, and it can connect external door and temperature sensors. Supported controllers include the Thermo King Truck Smart Reefer and the Carrier Standard, each with up to 3 temperature zones, and the data can include return, discharge, evaporator, ambient and setpoint temperatures.

For lighter needs, the IOX-BT described below reads ambient temperature from compatible Bluetooth beacons. Which approach fits depends on the refrigeration unit you run, so we confirm the controller model before recommending a module.

## What does the Bluetooth IOX (IOX-BT) add?

The IOX-BT lets a GO device monitor Bluetooth proximity beacons with public MAC addresses, up to 60 in range at once. It reports whether each beacon is in or out of range, and with sensor-enabled beacons it also logs ambient temperature, light level, impact data and beacon battery level. It works with all GO9B and newer devices.

This is the module behind small asset tracking: GO devices equipped with the IOX-BT detect nearby tags on tools, ladders and attachments and report where they were last seen. The supported tags are third-party beacons, sold in North America through Geotab Marketplace partner Link Labs.

## How does satellite coverage work with IOX-SATIRDv2?

The IOX-SATIRDv2 is a wired module that sends data over the Iridium satellite network where there is no cellular coverage. It tracks the vehicle's or asset's GPS position, lets a user send an alert message to fleet management, and reports ignition changes and acceleration events of 2.5 g or more immediately. The default satellite update period is 15 minutes.

It works with all GO7 and newer devices, is rated from -40 °C to +85 °C and needs professional installation. Activation goes through a support request with the GO serial number and the Iridium IMEI and should be done 24 hours before the vehicle heads out, which we handle as part of the installation.

## Which IOX handles plows and spreaders?

The IOX-WRKS is Geotab's public works module for winter operations. It works with more than 20 material spreader models, reads road and air temperature, and has four inputs, eight with an IOX-AUXM added. Geotab's required input map is AUX5 for a belly plow or manual spreading, AUX6 for the front plow, AUX7 for the wing plow and AUX8 for a tow plow or beacon, and the data goes to the Public Works Add-In, where you can see plow up or down status and, if your controller provides them, spread rates and road temperatures.

Spreader controllers connect through the module's serial port, and Parker, Muncie, Genesis and Marwis systems through its CAN connection. Geotab's support document lists GO9 and GO9+ as compatible devices, so we confirm support for your device model first. For other serial equipment, such as gas detection monitors, weighing scales or pressure monitors, the IOX-RS232 sends the device's data through the GO device to the platform.

## FAQ

### What can I connect through the IOX expansion port?

Geotab documents IOX modules for auxiliary switch inputs such as a PTO or plow (IOX-AUXM), NFC driver ID (IOX-NFCREADERA), refrigeration units (IOX-COLD), Bluetooth beacons and sensors (IOX-BT), Iridium satellite (IOX-SATIRDv2), winter operations equipment (IOX-WRKS) and serial devices (IOX-RS232). Each one plugs into the GO device already in the vehicle, so no second tracking system is needed.

### How many IOX add-ons can one GO device take?

Up to five. On GO7 and newer devices, up to five IOX modules can be connected in a daisy chain, and the GO10 supports a combination of up to five. There are limits within that total: a device takes at most two IOX-AUXM modules, and on a GO9 the whole chain shares a maximum current of 2,750 mA.

### Can I add IOX accessories after the initial installation?

Yes. The IOX port is already on the GO device, so you can add a module later without replacing the device. Start with core tracking, then add a PTO input, driver ID or a reefer connection when a specific need comes up. High Point GPS confirms compatibility with your device model, installs the module and checks that it communicates with the platform.

### Does every IOX add-on work with every GO device?

No. Compatibility depends on the module. For example, IOX-AUXM, IOX-SATIRDv2 and IOX-RS232 list all GO7 and newer devices, IOX-BT lists GO9B and newer, and the IOX-WRKS document lists GO9 and GO9+. High Point GPS checks the module against your exact device model before recommending or installing anything.

### How do I track a PTO with Geotab?

Many trucks made in 1996 or later report PTO status through the engine computer, and the GO device can read data such as PTO engaged and PTO fuel used without an extra module. When the engine does not report it, an IOX-AUXM input wired to the PTO switch logs each engagement, and the platform can then separate PTO work from unproductive idling.

### Can an IOX add satellite tracking where there is no cell coverage?

Yes. The IOX-SATIRDv2 sends position, driver alert messages, ignition changes and acceleration events over the Iridium satellite network when cellular is not available, with a default update every 15 minutes. It needs professional installation and activation through a support request about 24 hours before the vehicle goes out, which High Point GPS arranges for you.
