# Construction Equipment and Asset Tracking Software: Machines, Attachments, Materials and Tools

Construction equipment tracking software puts machines, attachments and tools, from a 40-tonne excavator to a laser level, on one map. What it tracks.

## What Does Construction Equipment Tracking Software Track?

Construction equipment tracking software, also sold as construction asset tracking software, shows where a contractor's machines, attachments and tools are and how hard each one is working. The assets fall into four groups, and each needs different hardware. Powered machines (excavators, loaders, dozers, generators with an engine) take a ruggedized telematics device, such as a GPS tracker for equipment, that reports location, engine hours, fuel, fault codes and utilization continuously. Towed and unpowered equipment (trailers, compressors, light towers, compactors) takes a standalone tracker: a battery unit such as the GO Anywhere, or a hybrid unit such as the GO Anywhere Plus where the equipment has power. Attachments and tools (buckets, breakers, plate compactors, survey gear, power tools) take Bluetooth tags that nearby vehicles fitted with the IOX-BT module read. Materials such as rebar, pipe, conduit and lumber don't carry a device at all. You track them by delivery and consumption, through geofenced deliveries and the project's own quantity records.

The software puts all four groups on one map and one list, and the guide to the types of construction equipment shows which device each machine family takes. When a superintendent asks where the plate compactors are, the answer includes the one sitting in the back of a pickup.

## What Does Construction Asset Tracking Software Report?

It reports location by site, using geofences drawn around each project, so you can filter the asset list by where things are and the system records a transfer between sites without anyone filling in a form. It reports utilization, from engine hours on powered machines and from movement on tagged ones, so you can see which of your twelve excavators earned their keep last month and which ones you rented while an owned machine sat idle. It schedules maintenance by engine hours and fault codes instead of the calendar, and raises the work order when the interval comes due. It also flags exceptions: a machine that left a site after hours, an attachment nobody has seen in two weeks, a rental due back on Friday that is still on a site.

## Can Asset Tracking Software Track Materials?

Material tracking is a separate problem. Nobody puts a tracking device on a bundle of rebar. A fleet platform contributes the delivery record: the truck's geofenced arrival at the site with a timestamp, plus a tag on the trailer or container so you know which site it's on. Quantities delivered, installed and remaining live in your project management or estimating software. The integration worth having links the two, so the delivery the tracking platform saw is the same delivery the project system counts. If you expect a telematics platform to do material takeoff, you're buying the wrong tool, and the same goes for expecting a project tool to know where the trailer went.

## Construction Asset Tracking Software: Standalone Tool or Fleet Platform?

Standalone construction asset tools handle the equipment list well and usually stop at the yard gate. A fleet platform that already tracks your trucks (such as the High Point GPS platform) puts the machines and tags on the same map, and the trucks, fitted with the IOX-BT module, act as the Bluetooth readers that make tags work on a site. The decision mostly comes down to whether you already run telematics on your vehicles. If you do, adding the assets to that platform costs less and leaves you with one system. High Point GPS installs ruggedized GPS tracking devices and Bluetooth tags for contractors across Canada and the United States, and connects the asset data to project and maintenance software.

## A Contractor's Asset List, After Tracking

This is what a mid-size contractor's list looks like once all four asset groups report into one platform, with the report where each row shows up.

| Asset group | Count | Tracked by | Appears on |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Excavators, loaders, dozers | 14 | rugged GPS tracking device | Utilization, maintenance, after-hours movement, site attendance |
| Pickups, service trucks, dump trucks | 31 | GPS tracking device | Trips, idle, driver safety, site attendance; the Bluetooth readers for tags |
| Generators, compressors, light towers | 22 | Battery tracker or GPS tracking device where wired | Location by site, movement alerts, engine hours where wired |
| Trailers and containers | 18 | Battery tracker | Location by site, dwell, movement alerts |
| Buckets, breakers, augers, forks | 46 | Bluetooth tag | Last seen by machine or truck; not-seen alerts |
| Survey instruments, power tools, kits | 120 | Bluetooth tag | Which truck it is in; left-behind alerts |
| Materials on site | Per project | Delivery geofence plus the project system | Deliveries by site, linked to quantities |

## FAQ

### What is construction asset tracking software?

Construction asset tracking software shows the location, utilization and maintenance status of a contractor's machines, towed equipment, attachments and tools on one map. It uses ruggedized telematics devices on powered machines, standalone battery or hybrid trackers on towed equipment, and Bluetooth tags on attachments and tools.

### Can construction asset tracking software track attachments and tools?

Yes. Construction asset tracking software follows tools and attachments with Bluetooth tags that a nearby vehicle or machine fitted with the IOX-BT module can read. The tag itself has no GPS. The truck or machine that hears the tag supplies the location, so you can see which vehicle a breaker or survey kit is riding in.

### Does asset tracking software track materials?

Only indirectly. Asset tracking software records geofenced deliveries, with a timestamp when the truck arrives on site, and the location of tagged trailers and containers. Quantities delivered, installed and remaining live in your project management or estimating software. The integration worth paying for links the two systems so both count the same delivery.

### What is considered construction equipment for tracking?

For tracking purposes, construction equipment covers powered machines, towed and unpowered equipment, attachments and hand tools. Each group takes different hardware: telematics devices on machines, battery or hybrid trackers on towed gear, and Bluetooth tags on attachments and tools. Good software handles all four.

### Should I use a standalone asset tool or my fleet platform?

If your fleet already runs telematics on its trucks, adding construction assets to that platform usually costs less than buying a standalone tool. You end up with one system, and your trucks, fitted with the IOX-BT module, act as the Bluetooth readers for tagged attachments and tools. Standalone tools usually stop at the yard gate.
