# Do AI Dash Cams Need Wi-Fi or a Subscription to Work?

AI dash cams for fleets need a cellular connection, not Wi-Fi, plus a dash cam subscription. What the fee pays for and what records without internet.

## Do AI Dash Cams Need Wi-Fi?

A fleet AI dash cam needs a cellular data connection, not Wi-Fi, and it comes with a monthly dash cam subscription, because the value lies in the upload, the platform and the detection more than in the recording. A consumer dash cam needs no connection at all: it records to a card, and Wi-Fi, where offered, only lets you pull clips to a phone in the driveway. A fleet camera's job is to get the clip off the truck. It does that over cellular, through its own modem and SIM or through the telematics device's connection shared via the IOX port, so it works on the highway, at the customer's dock and in the yard without anyone setting up a network. It doesn't need Wi-Fi, and a truck would rarely have Wi-Fi available anyway. The GO Focus Plus, the Geotab AI dash cam High Point GPS installs, has its own LTE modem and keeps event video in MyGeotab for a full year by default.

Some cameras use Wi-Fi when it is available, uploading bulk footage while the truck sits at a depot with a known network to save cellular data. That is an optimization, and the camera works fine without it.

## Does a Dash Cam Record Without Internet?

Recording and AI detection both run inside the camera. Out of cellular coverage, the camera keeps recording to internal storage, keeps detecting distraction, following distance and harsh events, and keeps alerting the driver in the cab. It queues event clips and uploads them when coverage returns. The live part is what stops: the safety manager seeing an event within minutes, and video requested on demand from the platform. Fleets that spend time out of coverage, in mining, forestry or on remote highways, should understand that lag, but they lose no footage.

## What Does the Dash Cam Subscription Pay For?

You pay the monthly fee for the parts a consumer camera lacks. The recording itself is a small part of it.

| Included in a fleet camera subscription | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Cellular data | Event clips and requested video uploaded from the truck |
| Platform storage and retention | Clips filed by vehicle, driver, time and place, kept for the retention period |
| Integration with telematics events | Harsh braking, collision and speeding from the GPS tracking device request the video |
| AI detection and in-cab alerts | Distraction, phone, following distance, seat belt; detection updates over time |
| Video on demand | Pull any time window from the platform without touching the truck |
| Coaching workflow and reporting | Events reviewed, assigned, tracked per driver |
| Firmware updates and support | The camera improves; someone answers when it does not |

## Can You Avoid the Subscription?

Only by giving up what makes it a fleet camera. Without a subscription, you have a consumer camera in a commercial truck: footage on a card that the driver retrieves after the fact. Some fleets run cameras that way, usually for exoneration only, and accept that they will never see the near-misses or coach anyone from the footage. For a very small fleet that is a legitimate choice, though it is a different product.

Weigh the monthly fee against a single claim. A clip showing the other driver ran the light can settle a disputed claim in your favour, and that clip only exists if the camera uploaded it automatically before the card was overwritten.

## How Much Data Does a Dash Cam Use?

The subscription includes the cellular data, so the question is what the allowance covers, not the size of the bill. Event clips are short, so they use little data. Live view and on-demand retrieval use far more, which is why camera data plans often cap live-view minutes or event counts per month. Continuous footage stays on the camera unless someone requests it, and requests are usually short windows around a known time. Before you sign, ask what the plan allows in event clips, live-view minutes and video requests per month. If you watch live view all day, ask for the plan built for that.

## FAQ

### Does a fleet dash cam need Wi-Fi?

No. A fleet dash cam uses a cellular connection, either its own or the telematics device's through the IOX port, so it uploads from the highway and the customer's dock. Some cameras use depot Wi-Fi for bulk uploads when it is available, to save cellular data, but the camera does not need it.

### Does the camera work with no cellular coverage?

Yes. Recording, AI detection and in-cab alerts all run inside the camera, so the driver still gets warnings out of coverage. Event clips queue on the camera and upload when coverage returns. Only the live view and on-demand video requests have to wait until the camera reconnects.

### Why is there a subscription for a dash cam?

The subscription pays for cellular data, platform storage and retention, integration with telematics events, AI detection updates, on-demand video, the coaching workflow, and firmware updates and support. The recording itself is the small part. Those services let a safety manager see and act on an event within minutes.

### Can I use a dash cam without a subscription in a fleet?

You can install a consumer camera that records to a card, used for exoneration only, with the driver retrieving footage after the fact. For a very small fleet that is a legitimate choice. It does not work as a fleet safety camera, though, and the clip is often overwritten before anyone asks for it.
