## What Can't Fuel Card Data Catch on Its Own?

Fuel card integration with GPS fleet tracking checks each fuel purchase against the vehicle's location, tank size and assigned driver, which a card statement alone can't do. A fuel card transaction by itself gives you an amount, a location and a card number. It can't tell you whether the purchase matches the vehicle it was supposedly made for, whether the volume pumped fits that vehicle's tank, or whether the vehicle was anywhere near the station at the time. If you review fuel card statements in isolation, you're trusting the numbers instead of checking them.

Fuel card integration with GPS data closes that gap. Each transaction gets checked against the vehicle's location, its odometer reading and the driver assigned to it at that moment.

## How Does Fuel Card and GPS Verification Work?

When a fuel purchase comes in, the system compares the vehicle's GPS location at that timestamp with the fuelling location on the transaction. If the card was used at a station the vehicle's GPS shows it nowhere near, the system flags it as soon as the transaction reaches the platform, so you don't find it weeks later in a manual audit. It can also compare the volume pumped with the vehicle's known tank capacity and catch a purchase larger than the tank could physically hold, before it turns into an odd line item on the monthly statement.

How fast that happens depends on how the card provider sends transactions. Where they arrive close to real time, a transaction far from the vehicle's location, or a volume that doesn't fit its tank, can trigger an alert to the fleet manager soon after the swipe. Where the provider sends a daily or weekly file, the flag arrives with that file. Either way, you see it well before the end of the billing cycle, when the chance to investigate has mostly passed.

## What Fuel Card Fraud Does GPS Integration Prevent?

The most direct case is card misuse: a driver filling a personal vehicle on the company card, or a card used somewhere the assigned vehicle never went. Checking location and tank capacity catches both, and nobody has to cross-reference every transaction against a route log by hand.

IFTA reporting gets a side benefit too. The integration already compares fuel purchase location with vehicle location for fraud detection, and that same location data feeds accurate fuel tax calculations for each jurisdiction. If you run the integration for fraud prevention, you're most of the way to cleaner IFTA numbers without starting a separate project.

## Which Fuel Cards Connect to the High Point GPS Platform?

High Point GPS is a Geotab partner and its platform runs on MyGeotab, so the fuel cards it can read are the ones Geotab documents. MyGeotab imports transactions automatically from WEX, EFS, Comdata and Fuelman, US Bank Voyager and FleetCard/CardLink through its fuel transaction provider add-in. Corpay (formerly Fleetcor) and Shell Card each list their own integration on the Geotab Marketplace, both available in Canada and the United States. For Canadian cards outside those programs, BlueArrow Fuel, another Marketplace solution, lists Petro-Canada, UFA, Co-op and BVD, along with WEX white-label cards such as Esso.

Check how your card is issued before you count on an automatic feed. Geotab's setup guide says it does not support T-Chek platform accounts, which may include some WEX Canada cards and Canadian co-branded cards on WEX, and that WEX and EFS data can take a few days to appear after setup. Registering each card's VIN with the card provider is the step fleets miss most: Geotab names it as the most common reason transactions stay unmatched. Where no feed exists, the Fuel Transaction Import add-in loads the provider's export file.

Once transactions arrive, MyGeotab's built-in checks flag a purchase made more than about 1 km from the vehicle's recorded location and a purchase larger than 110% of the tank capacity recorded for that vehicle. High Point GPS sets up the feed or the import and the card-to-vehicle matching during installation.

## How Do You Set Up the Match?

The integration works from the day the matching is right, and the matching takes an afternoon. You link each fuel card to a vehicle in the High Point GPS platform, or to a driver if your cards follow people instead of trucks. You enter each vehicle's tank capacity or pull it from the vehicle profile. Then you set the tolerance for the position check, usually a few hundred metres to allow for a large truck stop. Connect the fuel card provider's transaction feed or schedule its export, daily or weekly, and the first run will flag every transaction that fails a check. Expect that first list to be long and mostly explainable: cards assigned to the wrong truck, a tank capacity entered for the wrong model, a station whose address sits far from its pumps. Fix those, and from the second month on the exception list shows real problems. High Point GPS does the initial matching for fleets across Canada and the United States as part of fuel card setup.

## FAQ

### How does GPS data catch fuel card fraud?

GPS data catches fuel card fraud by checking each purchase's location and volume against the vehicle's GPS position and known tank capacity at the time of the transaction. If the vehicle was nowhere near the station, or the volume is more than the tank holds, the system flags the purchase as soon as the transaction reaches the platform.

### Can fuel card integration alert a fleet manager in real time?

Often, yes. When the card provider sends transactions close to real time, a location that doesn't match the vehicle's GPS position, or a volume larger than its tank, can trigger an alert shortly after the purchase. With a daily or weekly file, the alert comes when the file arrives, still well before the month-end statement review.

### Does fuel card integration help with IFTA reporting?

Yes, indirectly. The location data that fuel card integration uses to verify each transaction against the vehicle's position is the same data that feeds accurate mileage and fuel calculations for each jurisdiction under IFTA. A fleet that already runs the integration for fraud checks gets cleaner IFTA numbers as a side effect.

### What's the most common type of fuel card misuse this catches?

The most common misuse fuel card integration catches is a driver using the company fuel card to fill a personal vehicle. The other frequent case is a card used at a station the assigned vehicle's GPS shows it never visited. Both show up as a location or tank-capacity mismatch.

### Which fuel cards work with High Point GPS fleet tracking?

WEX, EFS, Comdata and Fuelman, US Bank Voyager and FleetCard/CardLink feed transactions automatically into MyGeotab, the Geotab platform High Point GPS runs on. Corpay and Shell Card have their own Geotab Marketplace integrations for Canada and the US. Other cards can go through a Marketplace solution such as BlueArrow Fuel or through a file import.

### Do Canadian fuel cards such as Petro-Canada or UFA integrate?

Yes, through a Geotab Marketplace solution. BlueArrow Fuel lists Petro-Canada, UFA, Co-op and BVD, plus WEX white-label cards such as Esso. Check the card platform first: Geotab does not support T-Chek platform accounts, which may include some WEX Canada cards, so confirm with your card provider before you plan on an automatic feed.
