## Geotab vs Motive: Where Does Each One Come From?

Geotab and Motive both provide registered ELDs and fleet tracking, but they are bought differently and started from opposite ends: Motive sells its own suite directly, while Geotab works through partners such as High Point GPS, which installs and supports it. Motive, formerly KeepTruckin, started with a free electronic logbook app for drivers, and the platform expanded from compliance into tracking, cameras and fleet management, sold directly to fleets with heavy emphasis on the driver app and on video. High Point GPS grew outward from telematics data. It is a Montreal-based fleet tracking partner that installs the engine-connected GPS tracking device, configures the open High Point GPS platform, builds custom add-ins and supports the fleet afterwards. The ELD is one application among many, with an add-on library of third-party add-ins around it.

You can see that history in the products. Motive feels like one integrated suite from one vendor, with the camera and the app at the centre. High Point GPS feels like a data platform with a partner attached: the fleet gets more configuration in its own hands and more choice of camera and add-ins, and a named team does the configuring.

## Geotab Through High Point GPS vs Motive at a Glance

Every row below can be checked on a public page: Transport Canada's list of certified electronic logging devices, read in October 2026, and Motive's own website. High Point GPS is a Geotab partner, and the ELD it installs is Geotab's. Certification status changes over time, and the list notes that the certification body has the final say, so confirm the current entry before you sign.

## Geotab vs Motive: How Does the Hardware Compare?

Both companies sell their own hardware, and both have ELDs on Transport Canada's certified list. Geotab's current vehicle device is the GO10: Transport Canada lists GO10 entries for Android and iOS, certified in 2026 by COMDriver Tech, and Geotab's support document says it uses LTE Cat 1 bis, reaches about 1.5 m accuracy in open sky and accepts up to 5 IOX add-ons. Motive's Vehicle Gateway sends location, utilization and vehicle health data in real time and comes with ELD capabilities, according to Motive; Transport Canada lists Motive LBB entries for Android and iOS, certified in 2024 by COMDriver Tech.

On cameras, Geotab makes the GO Focus Plus, an AI dash cam with road and cabin lenses and in-cab voice cues, and the GO Focus Pro, which supports up to 4 side or external rear cameras plus 1 additional rear camera. Motive sells the AI Dashcam, the AI Dashcam Plus and the AI Omnicam for side, rear, passenger and cargo monitoring, plus the Motive Card for fuel and fleet spending. With either brand, the cameras report to the same platform as the GPS tracker, so video sits next to the GPS fleet tracking data from the same moment.

## How Do They Compare on ELD Compliance?

Both are registered on the FMCSA ELD list, and both serve Canadian fleets. Both handle US and Canadian rulesets, DVIR, IFTA distance and the special driving categories. Motive describes its driver app as easy to use, which counts for a lot in fleets with high driver turnover. The driver app High Point GPS deploys is more configurable. The platform's exception rules let a carrier build its own monitoring on top of the logs for unassigned driving, edit rates and personal-conveyance patterns, and High Point GPS sets those rules up during onboarding. For most fleets, compliance is a draw. The difference is how much you want to shape it.

## Data, Openness and Integrations

Openness is the clearest difference. The platform High Point GPS deploys exposes its data through a documented API and SDK, supports custom add-ins, and runs an add-on library of third-party integrations: fuel cards, maintenance systems, dispatch, and cameras from several makers. A fleet with its own systems has a lot of room to work with, and High Point GPS's developers build whatever is missing. Motive also offers an API and an App Marketplace of third-party integrations. Its platform, though, is built around Motive's own hardware and apps.

If you want one vendor and one app, that integrated approach works in your favour. If you want your telematics data feeding your own tools, or want to pick your camera separately, the openness High Point GPS delivers is the reason to choose it.

## How Do Cameras, Hardware and Buying Differ?

Motive builds its own AI dash cam, integrates it tightly with its platform and app, and makes it a large part of its pitch. High Point GPS offers several camera options through the IOX port and the add-on library, including Geotab's GO Focus Plus, so you pick the camera instead of taking whatever comes bundled. Motive sells direct and offers installation services, delivered by a Motive employee or a third-party provider. High Point GPS sells direct too, and it installs at the yard, trains the dispatchers and answers the phone afterwards, in French and English. That support is the part of the experience a fleet should weigh most carefully.

## Side by Side

Here are the differences that usually decide it.

| | High Point GPS | Motive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Registered ELD, US and Canada | Yes | Yes |
| Sold | Direct, with installation and onboarding by High Point GPS | Direct, with installation by Motive staff or a third party |
| Platform | Open data platform, API and SDK, add-on library add-ins | Integrated suite around Motive's own hardware and apps |
| Camera | Choice of cameras via IOX and the add-on library, including Geotab's GO Focus Plus | Motive's own AI dash cam |
| Driver app | Configurable driver app | Motive Driver App, simplicity-focused |
| Configuration and rules | Extensive, fleet-built exception rules, set up by High Point GPS | Simpler, opinionated defaults |
| Best fit | Fleets that want data, integrations, choice and a local partner | Fleets that want one vendor and a simple app |

## What Should You Ask Before Choosing Between High Point GPS and Motive?

Four questions settle most decisions between the two. First, do you want one vendor's app and camera with nothing to choose, or the freedom to pick add-ins and integrations separately over the life of the contract? Second, do you run your own systems, such as a TMS, a maintenance system or a fuel card program, that the telematics has to feed through an API? Third, is driver turnover high enough that the simplest possible driver app outweighs configurability? Fourth, who installs, trains and supports in your region? With High Point GPS, installation is arranged with professional installers and support comes from its own team; with Motive, installation is done by Motive staff or a third-party provider. A carrier answering "one vendor, no integrations and high turnover" is a fair Motive customer. A carrier answering "choice, integrations, a stable driver pool and a local partner" should ask High Point GPS for a quote.

## FAQ

### Is Geotab or Motive better for a Canadian fleet?

Neither wins on compliance: both have ELDs on Transport Canada's certified list and French Canadian websites. Motive suits a fleet that wants one company for the app, cameras and fuel card. Geotab suits a fleet that wants an open platform, a choice of cameras and add-ons, and a local partner such as High Point GPS to install and support it.

### Do High Point GPS and Motive both provide compliant ELDs?

Yes. The ELD High Point GPS deploys is on the FMCSA registry and certified in Canada, and so is Motive's. Both serve Canadian fleets with the right rulesets, DVIR and IFTA distance reporting. Compliance on its own won't separate them, so compare platform openness, camera choice and who installs and supports the system.

### What is the biggest difference between High Point GPS and Motive?

The biggest difference is openness and how each one is sold. High Point GPS delivers an open data platform with an API, SDK and add-on library, gives you a choice of cameras, and installs and supports the fleet itself. Motive is an integrated suite built around its own hardware and app, sold direct, with installation by Motive staff or a third party.

### Which is better for a small fleet?

Either can work for a small fleet. A small fleet that wants one vendor and the simplest possible driver app may prefer Motive. One that wants its data flowing into its own tools, or wants a local partner for installation and support, may prefer High Point GPS. Driver turnover and existing systems usually tip the decision.

### Can I use a different camera with High Point GPS?

High Point GPS installs Geotab's own cameras, the GO Focus Plus and GO Focus Pro, which connect to the GPS tracking device and report into the same platform as your tracking. Geotab's Marketplace also lists cameras from other makers, such as Lytx and Rosco, which other providers offer; High Point GPS does not install them.
