# How Much Does an ELD Cost? What Drives the Price

ELD cost depends on the hardware model, contract length and features included. What drives ELD pricing, and what to ask before you compare quotes.

## How much does an ELD cost, and why does it vary so widely?

An ELD costs anywhere from a low monthly app fee to a much higher bundled rate, depending on which tier you buy. An ELD app on the driver's existing phone sits at the low end, because the only hardware is a small device that reads the engine. Fully integrated systems that bundle a ruggedized tablet, fleet management reporting and dedicated hardware cost noticeably more, since the device and the software tier both do more work.

Because of that spread, a dollar figure quoted online for "an ELD" means little until you know which tier it describes. Treat ELD cost as a range set by a handful of specific factors, and stop shopping against a single number.

## What drives ELD pricing?

The hardware model is the first lever. Some providers fold the device cost into the monthly subscription. Others charge separately for hardware you own outright and pair it with a lower ongoing fee. Neither structure is cheaper by default; it comes down to whether your fleet prefers to spread the cost over time or keep the recurring bill low.

Fleet size and contract structure count as much. Larger fleets usually have more room to negotiate the price per vehicle. A multi-year contract with an early termination fee also costs more over its full term than the same monthly rate billed month-to-month appears to on paper. A quote that looks attractive per vehicle per month can still turn out to be the more expensive option once you factor in contract length and termination terms.

## What should you ask before comparing ELD quotes?

Ask what the quoted price includes. Does it cover HOS logging and a driver app and nothing more, or does it also include DVIR, IFTA mileage tracking and broader fleet reporting? Two quotes with a similar headline number can carry very different feature sets, and comparing bare prices without that context will mislead you.

Ask directly about the hardware ownership model and the contract length too. Those two factors most often turn an attractive monthly rate into a worse deal over the time your fleet ends up using the system. If you aren't sure your vehicle count or vendor needs will stay the same, a slightly higher month-to-month rate with no long-term lock-in is often the better deal.

## What ELD costs sit outside the monthly fee?

The monthly fee is one line of several. A full ELD budget has three parts: what you pay before the first compliant trip, what you pay while the system runs, and what you pay to leave. Ask every vendor to price each line below in writing, for the same number of vehicles and the same term, and the quotes become comparable.

The exit line deserves more attention than it usually gets. US carriers must keep ELD records for 6 months, with a backup copy on a separate device, and Canadian carriers must keep records of duty status and supporting documents for at least 6 months. Before you sign, make sure the contract lets you export those records in a usable format if you cancel or switch vendors.

| Cost line | What to ask the vendor |
| --- | --- |
| Device and harness | Is the device bought, leased or included in the plan? Is the harness for your trucks' diagnostic port included? |
| Installation | Who installs it, how is it charged per vehicle, and does that include hidden mounting? |
| Driver display | Do drivers use their own phones or fleet tablets? Who pays for the tablet, the mount and the data plan? |
| Activation and training | Are activation, setup and driver training billed separately? |
| Features | Are DVIR, IFTA mileage and GPS history in the base fee, or add-ons? |
| Replacement | What does a failed or lost device cost, and how fast does a replacement ship? |
| Exit | What is owed on early cancellation, must hardware be returned, and can you export all your records? |

## Can a cheaper ELD end up costing more?

Yes, when the device stops being legal to use. FMCSA removes ELDs from its registered list when a vendor fails to meet the technical requirements, and it did so several times in 2026. Carriers then have up to 60 days to switch: drivers go back to paper logs or logging software, and the carrier installs a registered ELD before the deadline. After that date, a driver on a revoked device is cited for having no record of duty status and placed out of service.

Canada adds a second test. An ELD used in Canada must be certified by a third-party body accredited by the Minister of Transport, and Transport Canada's list shows certifications that were later revoked. Search that list by vendor, certification number or ELD identifier and check that the device you are quoted has the status certified. A device registered with FMCSA but not certified for Canada does not meet the Canadian requirement, so a cross-border fleet that buys on price alone can end up paying for a second system.

Each of these events moves the cost to you: new hardware, a new installation and driver retraining, sometimes while the old contract is still running. Ask each vendor how long the model has been registered in the US and certified in Canada, and what the contract says if the device is removed from either list.

## How ELD cost changes by tier

Here is how the cost builds from one tier to the next. Real quotes vary with fleet size, contract term and features, so compare vendors on the same feature list. For a Canadian or cross-border fleet, the certification column decides the shortlist.

| Tier | What drives the hardware cost | What the monthly fee covers | Certified in Canada |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bring-your-own-device app with a small plug-in | Little or none: a small plug-in and the driver's own phone | An HOS logging app, usually the leanest feature set | Some; check Transport Canada's list |
| Dedicated tracker with a driver tablet | The tracker plus a tablet to buy or lease | ELD software with more reporting | Depends on the device |
| Integrated telematics platform with ELD | Often bundled into the plan | ELD and fleet tracking together | Depends on the device; check Transport Canada's list |
| Enterprise suite with in-cab workflow | Highest: in-cab hardware and integrations | The broadest features and in-cab workflow tools | Depends on the vendor |

## FAQ

### Why is there no single price for an ELD?

ELD pricing depends on the hardware model (a bring-your-own-device app versus a dedicated tablet), what the software tier includes, the size of your fleet and the contract length. Those factors vary enough from one buyer to the next that a single quoted number rarely applies.

### Is it cheaper to buy ELD hardware or pay a bundled monthly fee?

That depends on your cash flow and how long your fleet plans to use the device. Owning the hardware outright means you aren't financing it through the monthly rate. A bundled rate spreads the cost out, but it may cost more over a multi-year term.

### Does a lower monthly ELD price always mean a better deal?

No. Contract length and early termination terms can make a lower headline rate more expensive over its full term than a slightly higher month-to-month rate with no lock-in. Before you choose, work out the total cost over the period you expect to use the system, including what it would cost to leave early.

### What should you confirm before comparing ELD quotes?

Confirm what each quote includes: HOS logging alone, or HOS logging plus DVIR, IFTA mileage tracking and broader fleet reporting. Quotes with similar prices can cover very different feature sets. Also confirm the hardware ownership model and contract length, since those two terms change the real cost the most.

### What happens if FMCSA removes my ELD from the registered list?

You have up to 60 days to replace it. During that window, drivers record hours on paper logs or logging software, and the carrier installs an ELD from the registered list before FMCSA's deadline. A driver still using the revoked device after the deadline is treated as having no record of duty status and is placed out of service.

### Does an ELD used in Canada have to be different from a US one?

It has to be certified for Canada. Canadian ELDs must be certified by a third-party body accredited by the Minister of Transport and appear on Transport Canada's list; registration with FMCSA alone is not enough. Some, such as Geotab Drive, hold both, so check each model on both lists before you compare costs, especially for a cross-border fleet.
