## Who Administers IFTA in BC?

For IFTA in BC, the Ministry of Finance administers the program for carriers based in British Columbia, and you file everything through eTaxBC, the province's online tax portal: registration, renewal, quarterly returns and payments. Payments are made out to the Minister of Finance.

## How Much Does IFTA Cost in BC?

A new IFTA applicant in British Columbia pays $300: a $200 registration fee plus the $100 annual licence fee, bundled together for a first-time account. After the first year, renewal costs $100 annually. That is the highest flat licence fee among the jurisdictions covered in our state and province guides, well above Alberta's $15 or Quebec's $70. Jurisdictions that charge per decal set instead, such as Ontario and New Jersey at $10 a set, can still cost a large fleet more in total.

BC issues IFTA decals with the licence once it receives the application and fee. They are valid from their issue date through December 31 of that calendar year, the same annual expiry other IFTA jurisdictions use.

*How one IFTA return is built: the ELD supplies the distance by jurisdiction, fuel receipts supply the gallons, and the two together give the net tax per jurisdiction.*

## When Should a BC Carrier Renew and File?

British Columbia processes renewals received before November 30 in time for December 31. If you wait past that date, you risk a gap between your old and new credentials, and missing returns or unpaid balances on the account can delay processing further. Quarterly returns follow the standard IFTA schedule shared by every member jurisdiction.

Because BC's registration and renewal fees are large compared with neighbouring jurisdictions, timing matters more here than in a jurisdiction where a missed window only means paying a smaller renewal fee late.

## Budgeting for a Multi-Province Fleet

A fleet with trucks based in British Columbia and a second base in Alberta budgets for two very different IFTA cost structures under the same agreement: BC's $100-a-year renewal against Alberta's combined $15 registration and $10-per-set decal cost. Neither number is large on its own. Multiplied across a growing fleet, though, the gap is worth factoring in if you are still deciding which province should be your carrier's home base.

## FAQ

### Which agency administers IFTA in British Columbia?

The Ministry of Finance administers IFTA in British Columbia. Carriers register, renew, file quarterly returns and pay through eTaxBC, with payments made out to the Minister of Finance. Decals are issued with the licence once the application and fee are received.

### How much does it cost to register for IFTA in British Columbia?

A new applicant pays $300 ($200 registration plus the $100 licence fee), then $100 a year to renew. That is the highest flat licence fee among the jurisdictions covered in our guides, so budget for it each year and confirm current fees on eTaxBC.

### When should a British Columbia carrier renew its IFTA licence?

Renew before November 30, so British Columbia can process it by December 31 and you avoid a gap in credentials. Missing returns or unpaid balances on the account can slow processing further, so clear those before you submit the renewal.

### How does British Columbia's IFTA cost compare with other provinces?

BC's flat licence fee is the highest in our provincial and state guides, though per-set decal fees elsewhere can add up for a large fleet. The quarterly fuel tax follows the same formula in every IFTA jurisdiction. The difference between provinces lies in the registration, renewal and decal fees, not the tax itself.

### Can a British Columbia carrier file IFTA online?

Yes. eTaxBC handles the quarterly return, the payment and decal orders in one account, and you enter distance by jurisdiction, which you can take from an ELD or GPS jurisdiction report. Returns follow the standard IFTA quarterly schedule, and a quarter with no activity still needs a return.
