## Who Administers IFTA in Ontario?

For IFTA in Ontario, the Ministry of Finance administers the program for carriers based in the province, and you log in to its ONT-TAXS Online portal to register, file and renew. Once you register, the Ministry issues a single IFTA licence covering your whole fleet of qualified vehicles, plus two decals per qualified vehicle. That one-licence, per-vehicle-decal structure is the same across IFTA member jurisdictions.

The licence and decals both run on the calendar year, valid January 1 through December 31, and you renew them every year. You must also carry a photocopy of the IFTA licence in each qualified vehicle. Put that on your standard onboarding checklist so you don't discover the gap at a roadside inspection.

## How Do You File Ontario IFTA Returns Through ONT-TAXS Online?

Ontario carriers register and file through ONT-TAXS Online, the Ministry of Finance's online tax services portal. It handles the initial IFTA application, decal renewals and requests for additional decals. Quarterly returns follow the schedule shared by every IFTA jurisdiction, and you must file each return and pay any motor fuel tax owed by the quarter's due date.

The Ministry starts the renewal: carriers in good standing receive an Annual Renewal Request for IFTA Decals form at least 30 days before their licence expires. You can renew online through ONT-TAXS or by mail to the Ministry of Finance with the completed form and the decal fee.

*How one IFTA return is built: the ELD supplies the distance by jurisdiction, fuel receipts supply the gallons, and the two together give the net tax per jurisdiction.*

## What Does Ontario Charge for IFTA Decals?

Ontario charges $10 for each set of IFTA decals you order, whether it is the initial set, additional decals for a growing fleet, or replacements, and the Ministry won't issue the decals until the fee is paid. New Jersey uses the same $10 per-set structure, while some jurisdictions, such as Ohio, issue decals at no charge.

For a growing fleet, decal costs scale with vehicle count. Factor them into expansion planning instead of treating IFTA credentials as a flat, one-time cost.

## How Do You Keep the Photocopy Requirement From Causing Problems?

The in-vehicle photocopy requirement sounds minor until it gets a vehicle flagged at a roadside stop. A missing or outdated photocopy after a licence renewal is an easy gap to leave open and an easy one to close. Add a check to the annual renewal process that confirms every qualified vehicle has a current photocopy on board, on top of confirming that the fleet-wide licence was renewed.

GPS-verified trip records are also what make an Ontario IFTA return defensible if anyone questions it. The jurisdiction-crossing data that removes manual reconstruction work applies in Ontario the same way it does in every other IFTA jurisdiction, whichever agency or portal receives the filing.
