## Can You Track a Fleet Vehicle Without Installing Hardware?

Yes, for many recent Ford, GM and Stellantis vehicles: the modem the manufacturer builds in at the factory sends vehicle data to the manufacturer, and with your consent the manufacturer shares it with a telematics platform such as MyGeotab, so the vehicle appears on the map with no device installed. The trade-off is control, because the manufacturer decides which models qualify, which data it shares and how often, and on most points that data is thinner than what a GO10 device records.

This is often called OEM telematics, or an integrated solution in Geotab's terms. Our guide Telematics Control Unit (TCU): What It Is and What It Does in a Commercial Vehicle explains the factory unit itself and the coverage risks of relying on it alone. This guide sticks to the three makes most North American work fleets ask about, and to what Geotab's partner guides say each one gives you.

## What Do Ford, GM and Stellantis Say About Their Built-In Telematics?

Ford Pro says its Telematics product works through the embedded modem or an approved plug-in device, and that Telematics Essentials is available on model year 2021 or newer Ford and Lincoln vehicles and certain 2020 vehicles with an embedded modem. For fleets that already use a third-party provider, Ford Pro points to Ford Pro Data Services and says its API delivers manufacturer-grade data.

GM Envolve sells OnStar API plans with "no additional hardware needed". It says the hardware is activated once the customer accepts the OnStar terms and conditions, that all plans are made available to GM-approved third-party providers, and it lists Geotab among those providers. GM Envolve also says OnStar Fleet Basics is included with most model year 2025 or newer GM vehicles.

Stellantis Fleet calls Mobilisights the exclusive source for embedded telematics data from Stellantis brands and says its data is ready to integrate with third-party fleet management platforms. Ram says its trucks and vans come ready for its connected services with factory-installed hardware.

## Which Ford, GM and Stellantis Vehicles Work With MyGeotab?

Geotab publishes a partner guide for each integration, with the brands, regions and model years it supports. Every guide adds the same condition: the manufacturer must validate each VIN, so the model years below are a starting point, not a promise for a given vehicle.

Geotab's OEM integration library also has partner guides for other makes, among them Toyota and Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Volvo Trucks and Mack, Freightliner, International, Hino and Rivian, plus equipment makers such as Caterpillar and John Deere.

| Manufacturer | Brands | Regions | Model years Geotab lists | Who gives consent, and how |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ford | Ford, Lincoln | US, Canada, EU | Most Q4 2019 and newer, once validated by Ford; 2026 E-Series not eligible | The fleet, in its Ford account on the Ford Pro portal, by adding consent for Geotab |
| GM | Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac | US (not its territories), Canada, Mexico | Most 2015 and newer, once validated by GM | The fleet, by signing the GM OnStar Fleet Terms through e-signature |
| Stellantis | Ram, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler | US and Canada | Most 2022 and newer expected; very few 2017 to 2021 | The fleet, by accepting the end user licence agreement in its MyGeotab database |

## What Data Do You Get Compared With a GO10?

Each manufacturer shares a different data set, and Ford sells two plans. The table compares what Geotab's data set and feature pages list for each one with a GO10 device. Fields marked not listed are absent from Geotab's page for that integration; ask before you count on them.

| Data | Ford Premium | Ford Basic | GM Premium | Stellantis (North America) | GO10 device |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Position | Most data every 30 seconds; speed and odometer up to every 5 seconds on eligible US and Canadian vehicles | GPS only at ignition on and off | Collected every 30 seconds, sent every 2 minutes | GPS coordinates every 1 second | GPS checked every second, curve-based logging |
| Engine data and faults | Odometer, engine hours, RPM, coolant, engine faults | Not supported | Odometer, engine hours, RPM, coolant, engine faults | Odometer every 60 seconds; fault codes as events; engine hours not listed | Reads SAE J1939 and SAE J1979 |
| Seat belt | Driver and passenger | Not supported | Driver only | Driver and passenger, every 10 seconds | Logged when the status changes |
| Harsh driving | Acceleration and braking; cornering limited | Not supported | Dangerous driving rule; scoring without harsh cornering | Forward and side-to-side acceleration every 1 second | 3D accelerometer and gyroscope |
| Hours of service | US only, through the Drive app; Canadian federal ELD not supported | Not supported | Not supported | Not listed | GO10 entries on Transport Canada's certified ELD list |
| IOX add-ons | None listed | None listed | IOX-KEYLESS remote commands through the API only | Not listed | Up to 5 IOXs |
| Hardware warranty | Ford's process; Geotab RMA does not apply | Ford's process; Geotab RMA does not apply | GM's warranty; Geotab RMA does not apply | Stellantis policy; Geotab RMA does not apply | Geotab warranty |

## How Is a Factory-Connected Vehicle Activated?

It starts with your VIN list. Your Geotab partner checks each VIN on Geotab's Vehicle Eligibility page; where the manufacturer has no automatic check, a manual request goes out, and Geotab warns that a manual Stellantis check can take over a week.

Consent comes next, and only the fleet can give it. For Ford, Geotab's activation guide says "the consent has to be provided by the fleet customer": you sign in to your Ford account (new users sign up at fordpro.com), open the Service Providers page, add any missing vehicles and choose Add Consent for the Geotab entity of your country, such as Geotab Inc CAN. For GM, you sign the GM OnStar Fleet Terms, wait two business days and confirm the VINs are on your fleet account. For Stellantis, you accept the end user licence agreement in MyGeotab.

The partner then registers each vehicle in MyAdmin as a third-party device and adds it to your MyGeotab database with its serial number and VIN, in one database only. Geotab's Ford, GM and Stellantis guides each say the data may take up to 24 hours to appear in MyGeotab after the vehicles are added.

## What Are the Limits of Factory Data?

The manufacturer stays in the loop for the life of the vehicle. In the Ford guide, Geotab says it cannot guarantee consistent service quality when data comes directly from the OEM, since uptime and response times vary by partnership. Geotab's warranty and RMA policy do not apply to Ford, GM or Stellantis hardware, so a failed modem goes through the manufacturer.

The Ford and GM guides say Geotab cannot support accident reconstruction requests for OEM devices. In all three guides, the VIN tied to an OEM serial number cannot be changed, and Ford and GM note that changing the device plan interrupts the data. None of the three works in Mexico for now: GM and Stellantis have no roaming agreement there, and Ford lists Mexico as unsupported.

Compliance is the gap that matters most for Canadian carriers. Geotab's Ford feature page states that Canadian federal ELD is not supported on either Ford plan and is available on GO devices only, and the GM page lists hours of service as not supported in the US or Canada. A truck that needs an ELD under Canada's federal rule needs a device from Transport Canada's certified list.

## When Does a Vehicle Still Need a GO10?

Give a vehicle a GO10 when it fails the eligibility check, when it needs an ELD in Canada, when it needs an IOX add-on such as plow inputs, driver ID or temperature sensing, or when you want second-by-second position for coaching and collision review. Older units and other makes usually land here too. The GO10 page lists support for up to 5 IOXs and all Geotab IOX add-ons, and it notes that the GO10 does not support the PWM/JPW protocols, which limits coverage of some older vehicles.

The GO10 connects at the OBD-II or 9-pin port through a T-harness with no wires cut, with a 3-wire kit where there is no port. A fleet can fit it itself, but we always recommend a professional installer. The reasons are in our guide on why to use a professional installer for fleet GPS and dash cams.

A vehicle can also move the other way. Geotab's Ford guide describes a swap from a GO device to the Ford integration on the same asset, in that direction only, and says data from the new device can take up to 7 business days to appear after a swap.

## How Does High Point GPS Set Up Factory-Connected Vehicles?

Geotab's partner guides for Ford, GM and Stellantis describe the steps a Geotab partner takes: check eligibility, register the vehicles in MyAdmin and add them to the fleet's MyGeotab database. High Point GPS is a Montreal fleet telematics company and Geotab partner, so once you have given consent to the manufacturer, we can do those steps for you and run your factory-connected vehicles on the same platform as the vehicles that carry a GO10.

We sort your VIN list into vehicles that can use factory data, vehicles that need a GO10, and units that need a heavy-duty harness or a wired kit, then support the whole fleet in English and French across Canada and the United States. ## FAQ

### Can I track a Ford Pro vehicle without installing a device?

Often, yes. Geotab's integration reads data from the Ford modem in most Q4 2019 and newer Ford and Lincoln vehicles in the US, Canada and the EU once Ford validates the VIN. You give consent in your Ford account, your Geotab partner adds the vehicle to MyGeotab, and Geotab says data may take up to 24 hours to appear.

### Which GM vehicles report into MyGeotab without hardware?

Geotab's GM partner guide says most 2015 and newer Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac vehicles in the US, Canada and Mexico are eligible once GM validates them. The fleet first signs the GM OnStar Fleet Terms. Data is collected every 30 seconds and sent every 2 minutes, which is coarser than a GO10 device records.

### Can factory telematics data be used as an ELD in Canada?

Not for these integrations. Geotab's Ford feature page says Canadian federal ELD is not supported on either Ford plan and works on GO devices only, and its GM page lists hours of service as not supported. A vehicle that needs an ELD under Canada's federal rule needs a device on Transport Canada's certified list, such as a GO10.

### Do Stellantis vehicles work with MyGeotab without a device?

In the US and Canada, yes for eligible Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler models. Geotab expects most 2022 and newer vehicles and very few 2017 to 2021 vehicles to qualify. The fleet accepts an end user licence agreement in MyGeotab, and its data set lists GPS coordinates every second but no engine hours.

### Can a vehicle switch from a GO device to factory data?

For Ford, yes. Geotab's Ford partner guide describes a swap that replaces a GO device with the Ford integration on the same asset, in that direction only, and says the new device's data can take up to 7 business days to appear. Check eligibility first, and keep the GO device if the vehicle needs IOX add-ons or a Canadian ELD.
