## Long-Haul Is a Different Problem

A local fleet's day ends at the yard. A long-haul tractor may be a thousand kilometres from anyone who can help it, in a jurisdiction with its own fuel tax, on a clock the regulation sets, with a driver who will sleep in it. Telematics for long-haul is therefore less about where the truck is — the dispatcher knows the lane — and more about the state of the truck, the driver's hours, and the record that the trip leaves behind for tax, billing and compliance. The data points below are the ones that matter over the road.

## Hours: Plan From the Clock, Not to It

The ELD counts the driver down, but the carrier should be planning from the same number. Dispatch that can see hours remaining assigns runs a driver can legally finish, schedules the reset where it is convenient, and catches the driver who is going to run out forty minutes from a truck stop. A carrier that reads hours only when a violation appears is using the ELD as a record; one that reads it live is using it as a tool.

## Fuel: The Overnight Idle

Long-haul fuel programs live and die on sleeper idling. A tractor idling through a summer night for cab comfort burns fuel for ten hours while covering no distance, and the idle report shows exactly which trucks and which nights. The fixes — APUs, bunk heaters, idle policies with data behind them — are known; the report is what tells a carrier which trucks justify them. Speed is the second lever, and the same weekly report shows both.

## Dwell and Detention

Every hour at a dock is an hour not driving, and long-haul carriers absorb more of it than any other segment. Geofence arrival and departure at every shipper and receiver gives the carrier a per-load dwell record it can bill against, and a monthly view by customer that shows who is worth the rate. Carriers that start billing detention from telematics records rather than driver notes typically find both that they collect more and that the customers' behaviour changes.

## Faults, Distance and the Record

A fault code on a local truck is a shop visit; on a long-haul tractor it can be a derate on a grade, a tow across a state line and a missed delivery. Live fault alerts with the code and location are what let the carrier decide — push on to the next service point, or stop now — with information instead of after the fact. The same trip data produces the IFTA distance by jurisdiction at quarter end, and, with a dash camera, the video that settles whose fault the incident was.
