## What a TCU Is

A telematics control unit is an embedded computer in a vehicle whose job is to gather data — position from a GNSS receiver, vehicle data from the onboard network, motion from sensors — and transmit it over a cellular modem to a server. It is the hardware half of telematics. The term comes from the automotive industry, where the TCU is a component the manufacturer builds into the vehicle to power connected services: emergency calling, remote lock and start, over-the-air updates, and the manufacturer's own fleet portal.

## Factory TCU vs Aftermarket Telematics Device

A factory TCU serves the manufacturer's connected services and, for fleets, the manufacturer's data programme — which may be offered directly or made available to telematics platforms through an integration, so that some vehicles can report into a fleet platform with no device installed. Where that integration exists, it is worth using for the vehicles it covers. Its limits are that it covers only that manufacturer's vehicles, only the data the manufacturer chooses to share, at the interval the manufacturer chooses, and usually with no expansion port for a camera or a sensor.

An aftermarket telematics device — a Geotab GO is one — plugs into the diagnostic port and does the same job for any vehicle, with the fleet choosing the platform, the data, the add-ons and the reporting logic. A mixed fleet of makes, model years and vehicle types is the normal case, and it is why most fleets end up on an aftermarket device even when some of their vehicles have a capable factory unit: one platform, one set of rules, every vehicle.

## What a Fleet Should Ask

Which of our vehicles can report through their factory TCU into the platform, and what data does that give us versus a device? Is the answer the same across our makes? Do we need add-ons — a camera, driver ID, temperature — that a factory unit cannot take? And is the data ours, with an API, or the manufacturer's? The answers usually settle into a device in most vehicles and a factory integration where it is clean, on one platform.
