# Zone Visit Targets: Grading Drivers Against Time-on-Site Targets for an Objective Bonus

A driver bonus that depends on a supervisor's impression is a bonus that causes arguments. Zone Visit Targets sets a time target for each zone a vehicle visits — a customer site, a yard, a transfer station — grades every visit against it automatically from the GPS data, and produces the score the bonus is paid on.

## The Problem With Impressions

Many fleets pay a productivity bonus, and many of those bonuses are decided by a supervisor who thinks a driver is fast or slow. The fast driver who takes a long lunch and the slow driver who waits at every dock are graded on impression, and the argument at bonus time is about fairness rather than numbers. The fix is a number both sides can see, computed the same way for everyone, from data neither side entered.

## How the Add-In Grades a Visit

Each zone the fleet cares about is a geofence in MyGeotab with a target: fifteen minutes at a residential delivery, forty-five at a commercial dock, twenty at the transfer station. Every time a vehicle enters a zone the add-in records the entry and exit from the GPS data, compares the time on site with the target, and grades the visit — on target, over, or well over. Visits accumulate into a score per driver for the period, weighted however the fleet chooses, and the score is what the bonus formula reads. A visit that ran long because the customer's dock was busy can be excused by a supervisor with a note, and the excuse is on the record.

## What It Changes

Drivers see their own scores during the period, not at the end, so the behaviour changes before the bonus is decided rather than after it is disputed. Supervisors stop defending impressions and start reviewing exceptions. The fleet finds out which zones have targets nobody can meet, which is a routing or customer problem rather than a driver problem, and adjusts the target instead of penalizing everyone. The same data, in aggregate, is the dwell-time report the fleet uses with customers who keep trucks waiting.

## Deployment

The add-in needs the fleet's zones drawn as geofences with targets set, and the scoring weights agreed with the drivers or their representatives before it goes live; a bonus formula introduced without that conversation is the surest way to lose it. High Point GPS sets up zones, targets and scoring for fleets in Quebec, Ontario and the northeastern US, and adapts the grading where a collective agreement specifies how productivity is measured.

## FAQ

### What is Zone Visit Targets?

A MyGeotab add-in that sets a time target for each geofenced zone, grades every visit against it from GPS entry and exit times, and produces a per-driver score for bonus allocation.

### Can a supervisor excuse a long visit?

Yes, with a note that stays on the record, so exceptions are transparent.

### Do drivers see their scores?

Yes, during the period, so behaviour can change before the bonus is decided.

### Does it need driver input?

No. Visits are recorded from the vehicle's position; drivers do not log anything.

### What if a target is unrealistic?

The data shows zones nobody meets, and the fleet adjusts the target rather than penalizing every driver.
