Mileage calculator for trips with stops

Enter a start, a destination and up to 12 stops in total, and the calculator gives the driving distance for each leg and for the whole trip in kilometres or miles. Distances come from Google Maps for a passenger vehicle, with options for a round trip and for avoiding tolls.

Driving distance and time come from Google Maps for a passenger vehicle at typical traffic. Addresses are sent to Google to calculate the route and are not stored by us.

Trip distance

Enter at least a start and a destination.

Why calculate trip mileage before you drive

Knowing the driving distance before a trip lets you quote the job, plan fuel and check a mileage claim against the real route. Straight line distance always comes up short, because roads bend and stops add detours. Calculating every leg of a multi-stop route gives a distance you can use for a mileage log, a reimbursement or the price of a delivery.

Record the real distance of every trip

A calculator gives the planned distance. High Point GPS fleet tracking records the distance each vehicle actually drives, with every trip, stop and start time, so mileage logs and reimbursements are based on the route driven rather than the route planned. FleetZap, our own software, adds dispatch with route optimization across drivers and a driver app.

Tips for accurate mileage

  1. Enter full addresses or postal codes rather than city names, so the route starts and ends at the right door.

  2. Put the stops in the order you will visit them. The calculator follows your order and does not reorder the stops.

  3. Turn on the round trip option when the vehicle returns to the yard, so the drive back is counted too.

  4. Keep the result with the trip in your mileage log, with the date, the purpose and the vehicle.

Mileage calculator questions

How does the mileage calculator work?
You enter a start, a destination and any stops in between, and the calculator asks Google Maps for the driving route in that order. It shows the distance and driving time for each leg and the total for the trip. You can switch between kilometres and miles, add a return to the start and avoid toll roads.
How many stops can I add?
Up to 12 stops per calculation, counting the start and the destination. The stops are driven in the order you enter them, so place them in the order you plan to visit. For a longer route, split it into two calculations and add the totals, or use a route optimizer to choose the best order.
Is the distance accurate for trucks?
The distance is for a passenger vehicle on the roads Google Maps chooses. A truck may have to follow a different route because of height, weight or hazardous materials restrictions, which can make the real distance longer. Use the result as an estimate and check truck routes when the vehicle has restrictions.
Can I use this for a mileage log?
Yes, as a way to find the distance of a planned trip. A mileage log for taxes or reimbursement usually needs the date, the destination, the purpose and the distance actually driven. Check the record keeping rules that apply to you with the Canada Revenue Agency, the IRS or your accountant before relying on estimates.
Are the addresses I enter stored?
The addresses are sent to Google to calculate the route, and High Point GPS does not store them. Nothing else is saved after you leave the page, so copy the results you need into your mileage log or spreadsheet. Avoid entering anything other than addresses, postal codes or place names in the fields.
