Compliance

Compliance: ELD, DVIR & IFTA

Electronic logging, digital vehicle inspections, and automated fuel-tax reporting, built to satisfy US and Canadian rules.

An ELD hours-of-service dashboard

Updated August 1, 2026

Compliance is where a lot of fleets feel the most pain, because the rules differ by vehicle class, province, and state. Geotab's ELD solution is built to the FMCSA rule in the US and the ELD mandate in Canada. DVIR digitizes pre- and post-trip inspections so defects get flagged and signed off electronically instead of on a paper form that never makes it back to the shop. IFTA reporting automates mileage and fuel-tax calculations by jurisdiction so quarterly filing stops being a spreadsheet project.

What's included

  • ELD logging built for both FMCSA (US) and Canadian ELD mandate rules
  • Electronic DVIR: pre/post-trip inspections, defect flagging, mechanic sign-off
  • Automated IFTA mileage and fuel-tax calculations by state and province
  • Audit-ready records instead of paper logs and spreadsheets
  • Alerts before violations happen, not after an audit finds them

How ELD Logging Actually Works Day to Day

The ELD reads engine data directly from the GO device to automatically record driving time, replacing the paper logbook a driver used to fill out by hand. A driver still manually indicates duty-status changes like going on-duty before driving, but the engine-tied driving-time record itself is much harder to falsify than a paper log or a basic e-log app, which is the entire point of the federal rule. The device is on FMCSA's registered list, which matters directly: an unregistered device is treated the same as having no ELD at all during a roadside inspection.

How Electronic DVIR Changes the Inspection Workflow

A Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) is the pre- and post-trip inspection a driver has to complete when they find a defect that could affect safe operation. Doing it electronically means a flagged defect shows up in MyGeotab immediately, routed to whoever manages maintenance, rather than sitting on a paper form in a cab until someone happens to find it. Carriers have a matching obligation to repair anything safety-related before the vehicle goes back on the road and certify that repair, and an electronic workflow makes that certification trail auditable instead of easy to lose.

How Automated IFTA Reporting Actually Works

IFTA (the International Fuel Tax Agreement) requires a quarterly report showing miles driven and fuel purchased per jurisdiction. Reconstructing that by hand from odometer readings and fuel receipts is slow and error-prone. Because the platform already logs exactly when a vehicle crosses each jurisdiction boundary, the mileage half of that calculation becomes a query against real trip data instead of a research project, and it's the single biggest time-saver most fleets report once compliance moves onto the same platform as tracking.

Why Running All Three on One Platform Actually Matters

ELD, DVIR, and IFTA are three separate regulatory requirements, but they're not three separate data problems: all three depend on knowing where a vehicle was, when, and what its engine was doing. Running them on the same GO device and the same MyGeotab login means a compliance issue, an HOS violation risk, an unresolved DVIR defect, a jurisdiction with unusually high mileage, shows up next to the operational data your dispatch and safety teams already check daily, instead of living in a separate system nobody opens until an audit forces the issue.

Frequently asked questions

Does one ELD work for fleets running in both Canada and the US?

Geotab's ELD solution is designed to meet both the US FMCSA ELD rule and Canada's ELD mandate, which matters for cross-border fleets that don't want two separate systems.

What is DVIR and why does it matter?

DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) is the required pre- and post-trip inspection. Doing it electronically means defects get flagged, routed to the shop, and signed off with a timestamp instead of a paper form that can get lost or backdated.

How does automated IFTA reporting work?

The platform tracks mileage and fuel purchases by jurisdiction as your vehicles drive, so the quarterly IFTA fuel-tax report is generated from real trip data instead of manually reconstructed from receipts and odometer readings.
