The GPS tracking device connects at the vehicle's OBD-II or 9-pin diagnostic port through a T-harness and reads data from the engine control module: location, speed, heading, trip start and stop times, harsh events and engine diagnostics. It sends that data over a built-in cellular connection to the platform's servers, usually refreshing every few seconds while the vehicle moves, and it appears in the High Point GPS platform within seconds to a couple of minutes.

The GNSS module (Global Navigation Satellite System, of which GPS is one part) draws on more than one satellite system, which helps on downtown blocks lined with tall buildings, where a basic consumer tracker struggles. No satellite signal reaches an underground garage or a covered loading dock, so the device picks up its position again as soon as the vehicle drives out, and data it could not send is uploaded once coverage returns.

Most vehicles get the GO10, which reports over LTE and tracks GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou satellites at once, with about 1.5 m accuracy in open sky according to Geotab. Legacy pre-2010 heavy trucks and equipment, trailers and unpowered assets may need another device from the range, and we match each vehicle on your list to the right one.

Cameras run on the same platform. The GO Focus Pro truck camera system adds up to 5 auxiliary cameras for side and rear views around trucks, buses and delivery vehicles, and the GO Focus Plus dual dash cam records the road and the driver. Video sits next to the trips the tracker records, so a manager can go from a harsh braking alert to the clip.

The live map shows every vehicle's location and status at a glance. Most dispatchers check it first thing in the morning and again through the day. Trip history shows where a vehicle went and when, which helps with anything from a customer's ETA question to a formal dispute. Driver behaviour scoring rolls harsh events, speeding and idling into a trend a safety manager can coach against, so you aren't reacting to isolated incidents.

Engine fault and maintenance alerts surface the same diagnostic trouble codes a mechanic's scan tool would read, without waiting for a driver to mention a dashboard light. All of this is part of the platform's reporting suite, and your quote spells out which features your plan includes.

Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector sets notice rules that apply to tracking identifiable drivers. Section 8.1 requires anyone who collects personal information with technology that can identify, locate or profile a person to tell that person beforehand, and to explain how those functions are activated. Section 8 adds the purposes, the means and the person's access and rectification rights.

Section 3.3 also requires a privacy impact assessment for a project to acquire an information system that collects personal information. A written tracking policy given to drivers before installation is a practical way to cover these points. This is general information, not legal advice.
