Battery & Satellite GPS Asset Tracker

A GPS asset tracker for trailers, bins and equipment: battery models run up to 10 years, and satellite options report where cell coverage ends.

Next-gen GO Anywhere battery powered GPS asset tracker, a compact sealed black unit

Updated October 9, 2026

A GPS asset tracker is a self-contained device that reports where a trailer, roll-off, generator or piece of equipment is, without relying on a vehicle's diagnostic port. High Point GPS installs and supports three options: the next-gen GO Anywhere battery tracker for non-powered assets, the GO Anywhere Plus hybrid tracker for powered equipment, and satellite coverage for assets that work beyond cell service. Every one of them reports into the same High Point GPS platform as your vehicles.

What is a GPS asset tracker?

A GPS asset tracker is a sealed device you mount on equipment that cannot carry a regular vehicle tracker, so you can see where it is on a map. It has its own GPS receiver and its own cellular modem, and it either runs on an internal battery or draws power from the equipment it is mounted on.

A vehicle tracker plugs into a diagnostic port or a harness and lives off the truck's electrical system. A dumpster or a dry van trailer has no such port, and often no power at all. That is the job of a battery powered GPS tracker: it reports on a set schedule, such as hourly, and keeps going for years on one battery.

Which asset tracker fits which equipment?

The choice comes down to whether the asset has power. The next-gen GO Anywhere is built for non-powered assets such as roll-offs, dumpsters and dry van trailers. The GO Anywhere Plus is a hybrid: it wires into a powered asset such as a trailer, a generator or yellow iron, and keeps a battery as backup.

Because it is wired to ignition, the GO Anywhere Plus also reports trips, distance, ignition status and engine hours, which a battery-only unit cannot read. When an asset works where no cellular network reaches, a satellite option takes over the reporting.

How does a satellite GPS tracker work without a cell signal?

Every GPS tracker uses satellites to find its position. What makes a satellite GPS tracker different is how it sends that position back: over a satellite network instead of a cell tower. That keeps equipment on remote job sites, logging roads or farmland visible after it leaves cellular coverage.

The GO Anywhere Plus uses 4G LTE Cat-1 bis with satellite fallback through select carrier partners. Model GATAA1 includes T-Mobile direct-to-cell with Starlink and Rogers direct-to-cell with Starlink. Direct-to-cell coverage depends on the carrier and the region, so we confirm it for the areas where your equipment works before you order.

For a GO device in a vehicle or machine, the IOX-SATIRDv2 add-on sends data over the Iridium satellite network where cellular is not available. It tracks GPS position every 15 minutes by default, sends immediate notifications for ignition changes and acceleration events of 2.5 g or more, and lets a user send an alert message to fleet management. It works with GO7 and newer devices.

How long does a battery powered GPS tracker last?

The next-gen GO Anywhere is rated for up to 10 years of operational life with hourly reporting. Its Li-MnO2 battery pack is not rechargeable. When an asset goes missing, a high-frequency recovery mode reports every 15 minutes so you can follow it.

The GO Anywhere Plus battery is a backup, since the unit normally runs on the equipment's 12 V or 24 V supply. That Li-SOCl2 battery lasts up to 3 to 5 years depending on use, can be replaced in the field, and has a health indicator so you know when to swap it.

How are GPS asset trackers installed?

The GO Anywhere needs no wiring: it mounts to the asset and starts reporting. The GO Anywhere Plus fastens with screws, bolts or cable ties and uses a 3-wire connection for power, ground and ignition. The IOX-SATIRDv2 needs professional installation and is activated 24 hours before the asset is deployed.

High Point GPS, a Geotab partner, installs and configures all three, names each asset in the platform and sets the reporting mode that matches how the equipment is used. Our Montreal team handles support in English and French for fleets in Canada and the United States.

How do asset trackers show up in the High Point GPS platform?

Trailers, bins and equipment appear on the same map as your trucks, with their last reported position and history. Engine hours from a GO Anywhere Plus on powered equipment can drive maintenance schedules, so service is based on hours worked.

A wired GO Anywhere Plus can also detect Bluetooth Low Energy tags (firmware 132.3.13 or later), which lets the tracker on a trailer pick up tagged tools stored inside it. Both trackers are rated from -40 °C, and the GO Anywhere is tested to SAE J1455, which matters for equipment parked outside through a Canadian winter.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a battery powered GPS tracker last?

The next-gen GO Anywhere is rated for up to 10 years of battery life with hourly reporting, on a non-rechargeable Li-MnO2 pack. The hybrid GO Anywhere Plus runs on equipment power, and its replaceable backup battery lasts up to 3 to 5 years depending on use. High Point GPS sets the reporting mode during installation.

Is there a satellite GPS tracker that works without cell service?

Yes. High Point GPS sells two satellite options. The GO Anywhere Plus model GATAA1 falls back to Starlink direct-to-cell through T-Mobile and Rogers, where the carrier offers it. The IOX-SATIRDv2 add-on connects a GO device to the Iridium network and reports position every 15 minutes by default where cellular is not available.

What is the difference between GO Anywhere and GO Anywhere Plus?

The next-gen GO Anywhere runs on battery alone and suits non-powered assets like dumpsters, roll-offs and dry van trailers. The GO Anywhere Plus is a hybrid that wires into powered equipment, keeps a battery as backup, offers satellite fallback on model GATAA1, and reports trips, distance, ignition status and engine hours.

Does a GPS asset tracker need to be wired to the equipment?

Not always. The next-gen GO Anywhere needs no wiring and simply mounts to the asset. The GO Anywhere Plus uses a 3-wire connection for power, ground and ignition, fastened with screws, bolts or cable ties. The IOX-SATIRDv2 satellite add-on requires professional installation, which High Point GPS provides along with configuration.

Does the Starlink satellite tracker work in Canada?

The GO Anywhere Plus model GATAA1 includes Rogers direct-to-cell with Starlink and T-Mobile direct-to-cell with Starlink. Coverage depends on the carrier and the region, so High Point GPS checks it for the areas where your equipment operates before you order. Where it is not offered, the IOX-SATIRDv2 Iridium add-on is the alternative.

Can an asset tracker report engine hours on equipment?

Yes, on powered equipment fitted with the GO Anywhere Plus. Because it is wired to power and ignition, it reports trips, distance, ignition status and engine hours on top of location. A battery-only GO Anywhere reports location only. In the High Point GPS platform, engine hours can be used to schedule maintenance.
