Geotab vs Motive: Comparing ELD and Fleet Tracking Platforms

Motive, formerly KeepTruckin, grew out of the ELD mandate: its first product was a driver-friendly logbook, and the platform expanded from compliance outward into tracking, cameras and fleet management, sold directly to fleets with a strong emphasis on the driver app and on video. Geotab grew from telematics data outward: an engine-connected device and an open platform, sold through resellers, with the ELD added as one application among many and a marketplace of third-party add-ins around it.

That history shows in the products. Motive tends to feel like one integrated suite from one vendor, with the camera and the app at the centre. Geotab tends to feel like a data platform, with more configuration in the fleet's hands and more choice — of camera, of add-ins, of reseller — around it.

Both are registered on the FMCSA ELD list and both serve Canadian fleets. Both handle US and Canadian rulesets, DVIR, IFTA distance and the special driving categories. Motive's driver app is frequently praised for its simplicity, which matters for fleets with high driver turnover. Geotab's Drive app is more configurable, and the platform's exception rules let a carrier build its own compliance monitoring — unassigned driving, edit rates, personal-conveyance patterns — on top of the logs. For most fleets compliance is a draw; the difference is in how much the fleet wants to shape it.

This is the clearest difference. Geotab exposes its data through a documented API and SDK, publishes add-ins for MyGeotab, and runs a marketplace of third-party integrations — fuel cards, maintenance systems, dispatch, cameras from several makers. A fleet with its own systems, or a reseller building something specific for it, has a great deal of room. Motive also offers an API and integrations, and has grown them steadily, but the platform is built around Motive's own hardware and apps, and the ecosystem is narrower by design.

For a fleet that wants one vendor and one app, that narrowness is a feature. For a fleet that wants its telematics data feeding its own tools, or wants to choose its camera separately, Geotab's openness is the reason to choose it.

Motive's AI dash cam is its own, tightly integrated with its platform and app, and is a large part of its pitch. Geotab supports several camera options through the IOX port and the marketplace, including High Point GPS's own Dual Dash AI Camera, so the camera is a choice rather than a given. Motive sells and supports directly; Geotab is bought through a reseller, which means the installation, training and support experience depends on who you buy from — and is the reason to choose a reseller carefully.
