High Point GPS vs Omnitracs (Solera): Long-Haul Heritage vs Open Platform With a Local Partner

Omnitracs began as Qualcomm's trucking division, the satellite terminals that put the first in-cab messaging and tracking in long-haul tractors in the late 1980s. It became an independent company, acquired several routing and compliance vendors, and in 2021 was folded into Solera, where it now forms part of Solera Fleet Solutions. Its strength remains the large truckload and LTL fleet: driver workflow in the cab, integrated routing and dispatch, hours-of-service with a long compliance history, and integrations with the transportation management systems those fleets run.

High Point GPS deploys Geotab, which was built as a data platform rather than a trucking workflow product. The GO device collects everything the vehicle offers, MyGeotab exposes it through rules, reports, an API and a Marketplace, and High Point GPS builds the workflow the fleet needs on top: the rules, the reports, the integrations to dispatch and maintenance, custom add-ins where the Marketplace has none. That makes it the more natural fit for mixed fleets, vocational fleets, municipalities and any operation whose needs do not match a truckload template, and for trucking fleets that want to choose their own dispatch, routing and camera vendors rather than take a suite.

Both provide ELDs certified in the US and Canada, IFTA and DVIR; Omnitracs' ELD heritage is long, and Geotab's is the most widely deployed. Cameras: Solera offers its own video safety products; High Point GPS offers GO Focus Plus and Marketplace partners such as Lytx and Rosco. Omnitracs sells direct, with enterprise-style contracts; High Point GPS sells direct too, but installs, trains and supports locally in French and English, which changes the experience for a fleet of fifty trucks considerably.

A large truckload carrier deeply invested in a TMS and in-cab driver workflow may find Omnitracs' suite the closer fit. Nearly every other fleet, including mid-size trucking fleets that want choice and a local partner, is better served by High Point GPS. High Point GPS deploys Geotab for trucking and mixed fleets across Quebec, Ontario and the northeastern US, and has migrated carriers from Omnitracs when contracts ended.
