Dash Cams for Trucking Fleets: What's Different From a Personal Dash Cam

A tractor-trailer has blind spots a car does not, incidents that cost more, drivers who live in the cab, and a regulator watching. The camera has to be different too: multi-lens coverage, event upload, driver-facing policy, and footage that stands up. What changes when the vehicle is a truck.

The Vehicle Changes the Camera

A personal dash cam has one job: show what happened in front of one car. A truck is longer, higher, slower to stop, blind on the right side and behind, and when it is involved in an incident the claim is measured in the hundreds of thousands. The driver is a professional whose record and livelihood the footage affects, and the carrier answers to the FMCSA or Transport Canada as well as to the insurer. Every one of those facts changes what the camera needs to do.

Coverage: More Than the Windshield

The incidents that cost trucking fleets most are not always in front. Right-turn conflicts with cyclists and cars in the blind spot, backing collisions at docks, sideswipes in lane changes, and trailer strikes on turns are all outside a forward lens. A truck camera system adds side and rear cameras — a five-camera layout is common — so the footage covers the vehicle, not just the road ahead. For a fleet that runs trailers, a rear camera on the tractor is not enough; the trailer's own view matters when the incident is at its back.

Driver-Facing in a Cab Someone Lives In

A long-haul cab is a workplace and a bedroom. Driver-facing recording in it needs a policy that respects both: recording while driving and during events, not in the sleeper or off duty; audio off unless there is a stated reason; footage visible only to the people who need it; and drivers told all of that in writing before the camera goes in. Cameras that let the fleet configure driver-facing recording per vehicle and per duty status are what make such a policy enforceable rather than a promise. Events From the Truck, Not the Camera

A personal camera decides for itself what an event is, from its own accelerometer. In a truck, the telematics device already knows — harsh braking calibrated for a loaded tractor, a collision, a speeding event, a following-distance alert from the camera's AI — and the camera's job is to upload the clip that event requests, tagged to the driver's log. That link is what makes the footage usable at scale: a safety manager reviews the events that matter, not hours of highway, and each clip carries the telematics context an adjuster or a court will ask for.

Footage That Stands Up

In a trucking claim the footage will be examined by people paid to find fault with it. Time and location synchronized with the telematics record, clips uploaded automatically before any card could be overwritten, retention that matches the claims period, and an access log showing who viewed and exported it are what make a clip evidence rather than a video.
