Hours of service calculator

Enter what you have used today and it works out how much driving time is left, which limit stops you first, and whether your 30 minute break is due.

Which cycle are you on?

Counts from the start of your shift, after 10 consecutive hours off duty. Breaks do not stop this clock.

Time at the wheel only, not on-duty time.

Reset this when you take 30 consecutive minutes off driving.

Everything on duty, driving or not, over the past 7 or 8 days.

US property-carrying drivers, 49 CFR 395.3. This does not model the split sleeper berth, the adverse driving conditions extension, the short-haul exceptions or Canadian cycles. Each changes the answer, so check your own logs and your carrier's policy.

The four limits, and the order they bite

  1. You may not drive until you have taken 10 consecutive hours off duty. That is what starts a new shift and resets the 14 hour window and the 11 driving hours.

  2. You may not drive after 14 consecutive hours from coming on duty. This clock does not pause: a two hour wait at a dock still spends two hours of it.

  3. You may drive 11 hours inside that window, and you may not drive once 8 hours of driving time have passed without a consecutive 30 minute interruption.

  4. Across days, you may not drive after 60 on-duty hours in 7 days, or 70 in 8 if your carrier runs every day of the week. Either period may end with 34 or more consecutive hours off duty.

Hours of service questions

Does the 14 hour window stop while I am loading?
No, and that catches people out. The 14 hour clock runs from the moment you come on duty until it ends, whatever you are doing. Breaks, loading and waiting all spend it. Only 10 consecutive hours off duty starts a fresh window.
What counts as the 30 minute break?
Thirty consecutive minutes not driving. Off duty, sleeper berth and on-duty not driving all qualify, and you may combine them as long as the 30 minutes run together. It is required once 8 hours of driving time have passed, not 8 hours of the shift.
When can I use a 34 hour restart?
A period of 7 or 8 consecutive days may end with an off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours, which starts your cycle again. Without one, hours roll off the back of the period a day at a time.
Is the cycle 60 hours or 70?
Seventy hours in 8 consecutive days if your carrier operates commercial motor vehicles every day of the week, and 60 hours in 7 consecutive days if it does not. Your carrier decides which applies, so ask rather than assume.
Does this work for Canada?
No. These are the United States limits in 49 CFR 395.3. Canadian hours of service are set by Transport Canada and use different cycles and daily limits, so a Canadian driver should not plan a day with this tool.
