ELD App for Canada and the US

Geotab Drive is the ELD app we install for fleets in Canada and the US: certified on Transport Canada's list and registered with the FMCSA.

Hours of service shown in the ELD app on a driver's phone

Updated October 9, 2026

The ELD app High Point GPS installs is Geotab Drive, an electronic logging device app for Android and iOS that records hours of service from the vehicle's engine. It is for carriers and commercial fleets that run in Canada, the US or both. In Canada it is certified by COMDriver Tech and listed by Transport Canada; in the US it is registered with the FMCSA. Our Montreal team sets it up and supports drivers and office staff in English and French.

What does an ELD app do?

An ELD (electronic logging device) records a commercial driver's hours of service from the vehicle's engine data and replaces the paper logbook. Geotab Drive is the ELD app High Point GPS deploys: the driver signs in on an Android or iOS phone or tablet, and the app works with the Geotab GO device installed in the vehicle.

Drivers still change their own duty status, such as going on duty before a trip. Driving time comes from the engine through the GO device, which Transport Canada's list describes as ECM synchronization. That link to the engine is what makes an electronic log harder to falsify than a paper one.

Team drivers can share a device, with up to 3 co-drivers signed in. Logs, violations and transfers then show up in the High Point GPS platform, next to the same trip data your dispatchers already use.

Is the Geotab Drive ELD certified in Canada and the US?

In Canada, yes. Transport Canada's list of certified electronic logging devices shows Geotab, Inc. with an Active status and COMDriver Tech as the certification body. The Android version has ELD identifier GOELD1 (certificate 6T31) and the iOS version GOELD2 (certificate 6T32). The GO10 device has its own entries: GOELD3 on Android (6T72) and GOELD4 on iOS (6T73).

Canadian ELDs cannot be self-certified. An accredited third party tests each one before it goes on the list, and the list also keeps revoked certificates, so check the status column before you trust a certificate number in a brochure.

The US works differently. Providers self-certify their ELDs and register them with the FMCSA, and Geotab Drive is registered with the FMCSA. At roadside, a device that is not registered is treated as no ELD at all.

Which hours-of-service rulesets and cycles does it cover?

For Canada, the app includes Canada South of 60 Cycle 1 (7-day) and Cycle 2 (14-day), the North of 60 cycles for single and team drivers, and rulesets for BC logging trucks and Alberta. Canadian daily limits are accumulated: 13 hours of driving and 14 hours on duty, with an elapsed limit of 16 hours after the 8 hours off duty. That is a different calculation from the US 14-hour window.

For the US, the federal rulesets include property-carrying 60-hour/7-day and 70-hour/8-day cycles, short-haul, non-CDL short-haul and passenger rules, plus intrastate rulesets for states such as California, Texas and Florida. Geotab counts over 100 rulesets and exemptions across the two countries, including agriculture options.

The app does not list a Quebec-specific ruleset. Our Montreal team supports Quebec drivers in French and helps you choose the Canadian ruleset for each driver.

How are personal conveyance, yard moves and unidentified driving handled?

In Canada, personal conveyance is limited to 75 km a day. Yard move time is logged on its own and does not count against driving hours. Separate reports show the office when a driver uses either status more than expected, so a habit gets caught in a weekly review and not at an audit.

When a vehicle moves with no driver signed in, the system records an unassigned log. Those logs collect in the Unidentified Driving view under Compliance, where an administrator can assign several at once to the driver who was behind the wheel.

What happens at a roadside inspection or border crossing?

At a US inspection, the driver enters the transfer code the officer provides and sends the logs by email or web services. At a Canadian inspection, the driver enters the officer's email address and taps Transfer (Canada). If a transfer fails, the compliance print view shows the logs on the screen and the officer uses the arrows to move between days. Roadside mode is PIN protected.

One app and one login cover runs on both sides of the border. What the officer can ask for differs: in Canada, the current day plus the previous 14 days; in the US, the current day plus the previous 7. Since July 22, 2026, the FMCSA no longer requires the ELD user manual in the truck, while Canada still does.

What hardware does the ELD app need, and who installs it?

Each vehicle needs a Geotab GO device. Geotab's ELD page lists the GO7, GO8, GO9 and GO9+, and Transport Canada also lists the newer GO10. The GO10 is installed with a harness. In California it cannot be installed yet because it has no CARB Executive Order, while the GO9 is covered by one, so we match the device to where each vehicle is registered.

High Point GPS installs the devices, configures the rulesets, and gives drivers and office staff ongoing training and support from Montreal, in English and French. Compliance data lands in the same platform as your GPS tracking, with one login for the whole fleet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Geotab Drive an approved ELD in Canada?

Yes. Geotab Drive is on Transport Canada's list of certified electronic logging devices with an Active status, certified by COMDriver Tech. The Android version is GOELD1 (certificate 6T31) and the iOS version is GOELD2 (6T32), and the GO10 has its own entries, GOELD3 and GOELD4. You can check the list yourself on the Transport Canada website.

Is Geotab Drive registered with the FMCSA?

Yes. Geotab Drive is registered with the FMCSA for the US ELD rule. In the US, providers self-certify their devices and register them, so there is no government certificate to show. What counts at roadside is that the device appears on the FMCSA registered list, because an unregistered device is treated as having no ELD.

Who is exempt from the ELD rule in Canada?

Transport Canada publishes the exemptions in its ELD handout for motor carriers and drivers. One that fleets often ask about covers vehicles with a model year before 2000, and it goes by the vehicle's model year, not the engine's: an older engine in a newer truck does not qualify. Check the full list in the handout before you take a vehicle off ELD.

What is the personal conveyance limit in Canada?

Personal conveyance in Canada is limited to 75 km a day. In Geotab Drive the driver logs it as its own status, and the office gets a separate report on personal conveyance use, so a driver who regularly goes past the limit shows up in a routine review and not during an audit or a roadside check.

How do drivers send their logs at a roadside inspection?

It depends on the country. For a US officer, the driver enters the officer's transfer code and sends the logs by email or web services. For a Canadian officer, the driver enters the officer's email address and taps Transfer (Canada). If the transfer fails, the compliance print view shows the logs on the screen, one day at a time.

What should I look for in the best ELD for Canada?

Start with Transport Canada's ELD list: the device must be there with an Active status, certified by an accredited body. Then check that it has the Canadian cycles you run, the US rulesets if you cross the border, French for Quebec drivers, and a team that installs and supports it. Geotab Drive with High Point GPS covers each of those points.

Is there a French version of the ELD app for Quebec drivers?

Yes. Geotab Drive is available in French, as well as English, Spanish and Portuguese, so Quebec drivers can keep their logs in their own language. High Point GPS is based in Montreal and supports drivers and office staff in French and English, from installation through roadside questions and day-to-day use.
