GPS Fleet Tracking & Telematics
Geotab vs Samsara: How a Geotab Partner Compares the Two Platforms
Geotab vs Samsara: both have ELDs certified in Canada. Geotab works through partners like High Point GPS, which installs it; Samsara sells its own suite.

Geotab vs Samsara: Who Are You Buying From?
The main difference between Geotab and Samsara is who you buy from: Samsara sells its own integrated suite directly, while Geotab works through partners such as High Point GPS, which delivers the open platform and does the installation, configuration and support itself. Both come up in fleet telematics research because both put a device in the truck, a map in the office and an ELD in the driver's hands, so the feature list won't separate them. Samsara is vertically integrated. The hardware, software, cameras and support all come from Samsara, sold directly and built on Samsara's roadmap. High Point GPS is a Montreal-based fleet tracking provider that supplies the GPS tracking device and the High Point GPS platform. The company that quotes, installs, configures the database, builds custom add-ins, trains the dispatchers and answers the phone is High Point GPS, in French and English, across Canada and the United States.
Both models work. If you want one company accountable for the whole stack and don't expect to need anything outside its catalogue, a single vendor serves you well. If you want telematics that fit how your fleet already works, and a partner you can reach by name, High Point GPS is built for that.
Geotab Through High Point GPS vs Samsara at a Glance
Every row below can be checked on a public page: Transport Canada's list of certified electronic logging devices, read in October 2026, and Samsara's own website. High Point GPS is a Geotab partner, and the ELD it installs is Geotab's. Certification status changes over time, and the list notes that the certification body has the final say, so confirm the current entry before you sign.

Geotab vs Samsara: How Does the Hardware Compare?
Both companies design their own vehicle hardware, and both have ELDs on Transport Canada's certified list. Geotab's current vehicle device is the GO10: Transport Canada lists GO10 entries for Android and iOS, certified in 2026 by COMDriver Tech, and Geotab's support document says it uses LTE Cat 1 bis, reaches about 1.5 m accuracy in open sky and accepts up to 5 IOX add-ons. Samsara's Vehicle Gateway VG55 has 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and is designed for self-installation, according to Samsara; Transport Canada lists Samsara VG54-NA, VG54-NAH, VG55-NA and VG34 entries, certified in 2026 by FPInnovations.
On cameras, Geotab makes the GO Focus Plus, an AI dash cam with road and cabin lenses and in-cab voice cues, and the GO Focus Pro, which supports up to 4 side or external rear cameras plus 1 additional rear camera. Samsara makes the CM34 dual-facing AI dash cam, with in-cab voice coaching, and the AI Multicam, which takes up to eight auxiliary cameras when two units are paired. With either brand, the cameras report to the same platform as the GPS tracker, so video sits next to the GPS fleet tracking data from the same moment.

How Do the Platforms and Data Access Compare?
The platform High Point GPS deploys is open by design. It has a documented API and SDK, an add-on library of third-party add-ins and hardware, a Data Connector for BI tools, and a rules engine configured for your fleet during onboarding. You can export all of the fleet's data. High Point GPS writes custom add-ins and integrations on top of the platform, as it did with GeoDocs when no off-the-shelf document tool fit. Samsara's platform is polished and coherent, with its own open API, SDKs and an App Marketplace of third-party integrations, all built around Samsara's own hardware and apps.
You see the difference in how each feature set grows. A single vendor ships new capability on its own schedule. An open platform grows partly through its owner's roadmap and partly through partners and third-party developers building on it, which gives you a wider range of tools, though one less centrally curated.
Compliance, Cameras and Support
Both offer ELDs registered with the FMCSA and certified in Canada, plus DVIR and IFTA distance reporting, so compliance is a draw. Cameras are where the two models split. Samsara's AI dash cam is its own product and central to its pitch. With High Point GPS, the cameras are Geotab's GO Focus Plus and GO Focus Pro, installed alongside the GPS tracking device and connected to the High Point GPS platform. Support is the structural difference. High Point GPS arranges professional installation, and your first call goes to its own support team, in English or French. With Samsara, support comes from Samsara's own organization, and installation can go through Samsara's network of installation partners.
Side by Side
The table compares the structure of the two models, not each feature. Both handle tracking, compliance and video. They differ on who builds what, and on how much room you have to customize.
| Item | High Point GPS | Samsara |
|---|---|---|
| Sold | Direct, with installation and onboarding by High Point GPS | Direct from Samsara, with referral and installation partners |
| Platform | The High Point GPS platform: open API, SDK, add-on library, Data Connector | Samsara's integrated suite |
| Hardware | GPS tracking device, IOX expansion, choice of cameras and sensors | Samsara's own gateways, cameras and sensors |
| Custom work | Add-ins and integrations built by High Point GPS developers | Samsara's open API, SDKs and App Marketplace partners |
| Support | The installer, by name, in French and English | Samsara's own support organization |
| Best fit | Fleets that need a workflow, integration or add-in no catalogue covers | Fleets that want one company accountable end to end |
What Should You Ask Before Choosing Between the Two?
The comparison comes down to four questions you can answer about your own fleet. First, do you need a workflow, report or integration that isn't a standard feature? That is where an open SDK, an add-on library and a partner who builds add-ins matter, and a single vendor's roadmap does not. Second, do you want to pick cameras, sensors and add-ins from several makers, or take one vendor's catalogue? One catalogue is simpler until you need something it lacks. Third, do you value one company accountable for everything more than a local partner accountable for installation, configuration and support? Fourth, who, by name, will answer the phone in month eight, in your language and time zone? High Point GPS answers that last question for the fleets it serves, and will tell you plainly when your answers point to the other platform.

Frequently asked questions
Is Geotab or Samsara better for a Canadian fleet?
Neither wins on compliance: both have ELDs on Transport Canada's certified list and French Canadian websites. Choose Samsara if you want one company for hardware, software and support. Choose Geotab if you want an open platform, a choice of add-ons and a local partner such as High Point GPS to install it and answer the phone in English or French.
Is High Point GPS or Samsara better for ELD and IFTA compliance?
Neither has an edge on compliance itself. Both provide ELDs registered in the US and certified in Canada, plus DVIR and IFTA distance reporting. The practical difference is in support and customization: how the compliance data connects to the rest of your operations, and who configures and maintains the system for you after go-live.
Can I switch from Samsara to High Point GPS without losing historical data?
Historical trip and behaviour data does not transfer directly between the two platforms, since they are separate systems. Most fleets export what they need from the old platform before switching and build history fresh on the new one. High Point GPS handles the device swap and the platform setup as part of onboarding.
Why would a fleet choose High Point GPS instead of buying directly from a telematics company?
High Point GPS provides local, hands-on installation and support across Canada and the US, and builds custom add-ins and integrations fitted to a fleet's exact workflow. A single vertically integrated vendor cannot always offer that kind of custom work, or not as quickly, because changes run through its own product roadmap.
Does an open platform mean less consistent support than a vertically integrated one?
Support quality on an open platform depends on the partner you choose, because installation and account support come through that relationship and not from the platform's maker. Choose the partner carefully for that reason. High Point GPS names the people who will answer your calls, so you know who supports your fleet before you sign.
