Why Multi-Stop Is a Different Problem

Point-to-point routing — the fastest way from here to there — is what a map app does. Multi-stop routing is a different problem: given sixty stops, several vans, time windows on many of the stops, van capacities, driver shifts and a depot, decide which van takes which stops in which order so that the total time or distance is smallest and every window is met. The number of possible plans is astronomical; the software does not check them all, it searches cleverly and finds a plan that is very good in seconds. That is route optimization, and last-mile delivery is the case it was built for.

The Morning Plan and the Re-Plan

In the morning the software builds routes from the day's manifest, and the plan goes to each driver's app in stop order with navigation. That saves the planner's hour and produces a better plan. But the value of the day is in the re-plan: a cancelled stop, a new pickup, a van running behind at 11am. Good last-mile optimization re-sequences a driver's remaining stops in seconds and can move stops between vans, with the driver's app updating and the customer's arrival estimate recalculated. Ask a vendor to demonstrate that, not the morning plan.

Where the Data Comes From

Optimization is only as good as its inputs, and the best inputs are the fleet's own history from telematics: how long this driver actually spends at this kind of stop, how long this street takes at this hour, where the van actually was when it was marked delivered. A route optimization tool that reads the fleet's telematics learns those over weeks and stops being wrong about the same street every morning. Live location from the vehicle is also what tells it a van is behind before the driver calls.

What to Measure

Stops per route per hour, distance per stop, on-time rate against windows, and planner time. A fleet moving from manual planning to optimization typically sees more stops per route, fewer kilometres per stop and a planner freed for exceptions, and those are the numbers to hold a vendor to in a trial: run the same day's manifest both ways and compare.
