IFTA in British Columbia: Filing Guide

British Columbia's Ministry of Finance administers IFTA for carriers based in the province, with payments made payable to the Minister of Finance directly. Carriers register, renew, file returns, and make payments through eTaxBC, the province's online tax services portal.

A new IFTA applicant in British Columbia pays $300: a $200 registration fee plus the $100 annual license fee bundled together for a first-time account. After that first year, renewal runs $100 annually, still the highest ongoing IFTA fee among every jurisdiction covered in High Point GPS's state and province guides, well above Alberta's $15, Quebec's $70, or the $10-per-set decal charges used by Ontario and New Jersey.

IFTA decals are issued alongside the license once the application and fee are received, and they're valid from their issue date through December 31 of that calendar year, the same annual expiry structure used across IFTA jurisdictions generally.

British Columbia processes renewals received before November 30 in time for December 31, so carriers who wait past that point risk a gap between their old and new credentials, particularly if there are missing returns or unpaid balances on the account, both of which can delay processing further. Quarterly returns otherwise follow the standard IFTA schedule shared across every member jurisdiction.

Given the size of BC's registration and renewal fees relative to neighboring jurisdictions, getting the timing right matters more here than in a jurisdiction where a missed window just means paying a smaller renewal fee late.
