Is There a Free ELD? What Owner-Operators Actually Pay

There is no genuinely free ELD. The 'free' app is real but it requires a paid subscription and a piece of hardware to function, so what you actually pay is hardware plus a monthly per-truck fee.

The Short Answer: 'Free ELD' Is Marketing, Not a Product

There is no truly free ELD. When a vendor advertises a 'free ELD,' what is usually free is the driver app, and the app cannot log hours of service on its own. It needs a hardware device connected to the engine to read movement and engine data, and it needs a paid data plan or subscription to keep the compliance service running. So the honest total is hardware plus a recurring per-truck fee, and the 'free' label is describing one component while quietly assuming you pay for the rest.

This matters most for owner-operators, because they feel every dollar of a monthly fee directly and are the exact audience 'free ELD' ads are aimed at. Going in expecting a real number, rather than a headline zero, is what keeps a device from becoming a surprise line item three months in.

What You Are Actually Paying For

Break the cost into two parts. First, the hardware: a device that plugs into the diagnostic port and reads engine and movement data. Some vendors bundle this into the subscription, some charge for it upfront, and the upfront-versus-bundled choice mostly changes when you pay, not whether you pay. Second, the monthly per-truck fee: this covers the compliance service, cellular data to transmit records, log storage, and support if you get flagged at a scale house. That second number is the one that recurs for as long as you run the device.

The number that actually matters when comparing options is the total cost of ownership over the time you plan to keep the truck, not the sticker on any single piece. A device that is cheap upfront but carries a high monthly fee can cost more over two years than one with a higher hardware price and a lower recurring fee, and the reverse is just as often true.

The Non-Negotiable: It Has to Be FMCSA-Registered

Price is the second question. The first is whether the device is on the FMCSA registered ELD list. A device that is not registered is treated at a roadside inspection exactly as if you had no ELD at all, which can mean violations and an out-of-service order, so a cheaper unregistered gadget is not a saving, it is a liability. Confirm the exact make and model against the current registered list before buying, because the list does change and self-certified devices have been removed from it before.

This is where the very cheapest 'free' offers deserve the most scrutiny. If a device's registration status is hard to verify, or the vendor is vague about which certified model the app pairs with, that uncertainty is a cost of its own, and it is the kind that only shows up on the worst possible day.

Why Owner-Operators Often Buy the Combined Device Anyway

A pure compliance-only ELD does one job. For a similar monthly fee, a combined telematics device handles ELD and hours of service and adds GPS tracking, engine diagnostics, and the mileage-by-jurisdiction data that makes IFTA far less painful to file. For an owner-operator, that IFTA angle alone can justify the difference, because the same device that keeps you compliant also produces the distance records you would otherwise reconstruct by hand every quarter.

So the practical framing is not 'free versus paid,' it is 'what am I getting for the monthly fee I am going to pay regardless.' Once you accept that a compliant ELD has a real recurring cost, the question becomes whether that fee buys compliance alone or compliance plus tracking and tax reporting on the same bill.

Frequently asked questions

Is there actually a free ELD?

Not really. A vendor may offer a free driver app, but the app cannot log hours of service without a hardware device on the engine and a paid subscription to run the compliance service. The real cost is hardware plus a recurring per-truck fee.

What does an ELD cost an owner-operator per month?

It varies by vendor, but plan on a recurring per-truck monthly fee that covers the compliance service, cellular data, log storage, and support, on top of the hardware. Compare the total cost of ownership over the time you will keep the truck, not just the upfront price.

Does the ELD have to be FMCSA-registered?

Yes. A device that is not on the FMCSA registered ELD list is treated the same as having no ELD during a roadside inspection, which can result in violations and an out-of-service order. Verify the exact make and model against the current registered list before buying.

Should an owner-operator buy a compliance-only ELD or a combined device?

For a similar monthly fee, a combined telematics device adds GPS tracking, engine diagnostics, and mileage-by-jurisdiction data that simplifies IFTA, on top of ELD compliance. Many owner-operators choose the combined device because they are paying a recurring fee either way.
