High Point GPS vs Motive: Comparing ELD and Fleet Tracking Options

Motive, formerly KeepTruckin, grew out of the ELD mandate: its first product was a driver-friendly logbook, and the platform expanded from compliance outward into tracking, cameras and fleet management, sold directly to fleets with a strong emphasis on the driver app and on video. High Point GPS grew from telematics data outward: a Montreal-based Geotab partner that installs the engine-connected GO device, configures the open MyGeotab platform, builds custom add-ins and supports the fleet afterwards, with the ELD as one application among many and a Marketplace of third-party add-ins around it.

That history shows in the products. Motive feels like one integrated suite from one vendor, with the camera and the app at the centre. High Point GPS feels like a data platform with a partner attached: more configuration in the fleet's hands, more choice of camera and add-ins, and a named team doing the configuring.

Both are registered on the FMCSA ELD list and both serve Canadian fleets. Both handle US and Canadian rulesets, DVIR, IFTA distance and the special driving categories. Motive's driver app is frequently praised for its simplicity, which matters for fleets with high driver turnover. The Geotab Drive app High Point GPS deploys is more configurable, and the platform's exception rules let a carrier build its own monitoring for unassigned driving, edit rates and personal-conveyance patterns on top of the logs, which High Point GPS sets up during onboarding. For most fleets compliance is a draw; the difference is in how much the fleet wants to shape it.

This is the clearest difference. The platform High Point GPS deploys exposes its data through a documented API and SDK, publishes add-ins for MyGeotab, and runs a Marketplace of third-party integrations: fuel cards, maintenance systems, dispatch, cameras from several makers. A fleet with its own systems has a great deal of room, and High Point GPS's developers build what is missing. Motive also offers an API and integrations, and has grown them steadily, but the platform is built around Motive's own hardware and apps, and the ecosystem is narrower by design.

For a fleet that wants one vendor and one app, that narrowness is a feature. For a fleet that wants its telematics data feeding its own tools, or wants to choose its camera separately, the openness High Point GPS delivers is the reason to choose it.

Motive's AI dash cam is its own, tightly integrated with its platform and app, and a large part of its pitch. High Point GPS offers several camera options through the IOX port and the Marketplace, including its own Dual Dash AI Camera, so the camera is a choice rather than a given. Motive sells and supports directly and remotely. High Point GPS sells direct too, but installs at the yard, trains the dispatchers and answers the phone afterwards, in French and English, which is the part of the experience a fleet should weigh most carefully.

A summary of the differences that decide it.

Four questions settle most decisions between the two. Whether the fleet wants one vendor's app and camera with nothing to choose, or the ability to pick cameras, add-ins and integrations separately over the life of the contract. Whether the fleet has its own systems, such as a TMS, a maintenance system or a fuel card program, that the telematics has to feed through an API. Whether driver turnover is high enough that the simplest possible driver app outweighs configurability. And who installs, trains and supports in the fleet's region, because with High Point GPS that is High Point GPS and with Motive it is a remote vendor. A carrier answering "one vendor, no integrations, high turnover and remote support" is a fair Motive customer. One answering "choice, integrations, a stable driver pool and a local partner" should ask High Point GPS for a quote.
