Who Administers IFTA in Indiana

The Indiana Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services division administers IFTA for carriers based in the state. Registration, quarterly returns, renewals, and decal orders are all handled through Indiana's online Fuel Tax System, accessed at motorcarrier.dor.in.gov.

A License Fee Instead of a Decal Fee

Indiana structures its costs differently from most jurisdictions in this series: there's a $25 application fee for the IFTA license itself, but decals are issued at no additional charge once that license is approved. That's the inverse of a jurisdiction like Georgia, which charges nothing for the license but $3 per set of decals, or Pennsylvania, which charges $12 per vehicle annually with no separate license fee.

Carriers with an established Indiana IFTA account can also request no-fee, 30-day temporary decal permits directly from the state office, useful for a newly added vehicle that needs to run before permanent decals arrive.

Filing and Recordkeeping

Indiana requires a quarterly return to be filed even in a quarter where no fuel was used, a detail worth building into a compliance checklist since it's an easy filing to skip by assuming an idle quarter needs no paperwork. Outside of that, the filing calendar and four-year recordkeeping standard follow the same shared IFTA Procedures Manual used across every member jurisdiction.

For fleets running the Midwest corridor through Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan, all covered elsewhere in this series, GPS-verified jurisdiction-crossing records make reconciling mileage across that many state lines a matter of pulling a report rather than reconstructing it by hand each quarter.

Indiana's Position on the Map Matters More Than Its Fees

Indiana's low-cost licensing structure, a flat $25 with free decals, is less consequential for most carriers than its position: the state sits at the crossing point of several of the busiest north-south and east-west interstate freight routes in the country. A fleet that never intends to base a truck in Indiana can still rack up significant Indiana-taxed mileage simply by routing through it regularly, which is the same underlying reason accurate jurisdiction tracking matters everywhere in this series, not just in the states a carrier calls home.
