Who Handles Indiana IRP Registration?

Indiana IRP registration is handled by the Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services division, which also runs the state's IFTA program, with both in one online portal. Carriers running qualified vehicles into other states or provinces register there for apportioned plates and pay a fee split by where the fleet drives. Indiana's state motto is the Crossroads of America, and its interstates tie it directly to its neighbours. A fleet based in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne or Gary becomes interjurisdictional as soon as it runs to Illinois, Ohio, Michigan or Kentucky.

What Drives the Indiana Apportioned Fee?

An Indiana distance schedule is a Midwest mix, with Chicago at one end and Louisville and Cincinnati at the other: large percentages in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky, plus Ontario for fleets running north through Detroit. For vehicles over 59,999 pounds, Kentucky's KYU weight-distance tax also applies to the Kentucky miles, on top of IRP and IFTA. Telematics distance-by-jurisdiction reporting, built from continuously logged position, gives you the July-to-June schedule for each unit and the IFTA quarter from one dataset, and the same trip data supports the KYU filing.

An apportioned fee is each jurisdiction's full-year fee weighted by the share of distance run there, added up and paid once to the base jurisdiction.

Roadside Checks and Audits in Indiana

The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division runs permanent scales along Indiana's interstate system, where officers check cab cards, weights and ELD records together. Keeping all of it current from one telematics record leaves fewer gaps to explain at a stop.

Frequently asked questions

Who handles IRP registration in Indiana?

The Indiana Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services handles IRP registration. Applications, renewals and supplements for the apportioned plate and cab card all go through that office. It also runs Indiana's IFTA program, so you manage both credentials in the same online portal.

Does a truck based in Indiana need IRP if it never leaves Indiana?

No. A power unit that stays inside Indiana registers at the BMV, or with DOR Motor Carrier Services under the Base Plate program if the owner has 5 or more qualifying commercial vehicles. IRP covers vehicles operating in two or more member jurisdictions, so the first regular run into Ohio or Illinois triggers it. A one-off trip can use a trip permit.

Which reporting period does the Indiana distance schedule cover?

The Indiana distance schedule covers July 1 to June 30 of the year before the registration year. At renewal, Motor Carrier Services asks for actual miles per jurisdiction for each power unit over that window. A new fleet without a full year on record uses the estimated distance chart instead.

Does an Indiana apportioned plate replace the IFTA licence?

No. The apportioned plate and cab card cover registration, and the IFTA licence and decals cover fuel tax. An Indiana fleet that crosses into Ohio needs both. If either one lapses, the truck can be stopped at the roadside, so track the two renewal dates separately.

How long must IRP distance records be kept in Indiana?

Keep IRP distance records for at least three years after the close of the registration year they support. Motor Carrier Services can audit that window, and it asks for distance by jurisdiction tied to a unit and a date, which GPS trip logs supply directly.
