IOX-NFCREADERA: Driver ID by NFC Tap, So Every Trip Has a Name on It

In a fleet where drivers change vehicles — shared pools, slip-seat trucking, municipal depots, rental units — the GO device's record is attached to the truck. The harsh braking event belongs to unit 14, not to whoever was driving it at 3 p.m. Driver ID fixes that attribution. Once a driver is identified for a trip, the safety score, the idle time, the speeding events, the hours and the fuel purchases are theirs, and coaching, bonuses and disputes have a name attached.

The IOX-NFCREADERA plugs into the IOX port on the GO device and mounts in the cab within reach of the driver's seat. Each driver carries an NFC key fob or card registered to them in MyGeotab. At the start of a shift the driver taps the reader; the GO device records the driver against the vehicle until the next tap or until the shift ends by rule. Fleets can set the device to beep until a driver taps, so a trip without an ID is the exception rather than the norm. Paired with a starter relay and the Authorized Driver Tool, the same tap becomes an authorization to start.

Geotab Drive assigns a driver through the app login, which is the right method for ELD fleets whose drivers already carry a tablet. NFC is the method for fleets where the vehicle has no tablet, the driver has no phone policy, or the tap has to be fast and unarguable: pools, depots, equipment yards. Many fleets run both, app login on the ELD trucks and NFC on the rest.
