Authorized Driver Tool: Only Approved Drivers Can Start the Vehicle

An NFC driver ID reader on the GO device's IOX port records which driver tapped in, so every trip is attributed to a person and the scorecards, hours and reports follow the driver rather than the truck. That is identification. Authorization is the next step: the vehicle does not start unless the driver who tapped is on that vehicle's approved list. The Authorized Driver Tool adds the list, and a relay kit on the starter circuit adds the enforcement.

Each vehicle in MyGeotab carries a whitelist of drivers. The driver taps their NFC key on the reader; the GO device checks the ID against the list; if it matches, the relay closes and the vehicle starts normally, and the trip is logged to that driver. If it does not, the vehicle does not start and the attempt is recorded. The list is maintained in the platform, so a driver whose licence class, medical or certification lapses is removed from the vehicles that need it with a click, and the vehicle enforces the change on the next tap.

Fleets whose vehicles need specific credentials — a class of licence, a forklift or aerial-lift certification, a hazardous materials endorsement — use it to make the credential a condition of starting rather than a policy on paper. Shared pools use it to keep the unassigned van from becoming everyone's van. Rental and equipment fleets use it to stop machines running under an operator who is not on the contract. Municipalities use it where a collective agreement assigns vehicles to classifications.

The IOX-NFCREADERA plugs into the GO device's expansion port and mounts in the cab; the relay kit is wired into the starter circuit by an installer, with an override procedure for emergencies.
