What Is Geotab? The Company, GO Devices, MyGeotab and the Marketplace

Geotab is a Canadian telematics company that makes GO tracking devices, AI dash cams and MyGeotab, the web-based software where a fleet sees its vehicle and driver data. Neil Cawse founded Geotab in Oakville, Canada, in 2000, and the company says it now connects about 6 million vehicles and assets for more than 100,000 customers.

Geotab describes itself as a global leader in connected operations, video telematics and AI-powered insights. On its about page it lists more than 2,700 employees, more than 700 partners and 100 billion data points processed every day. Those are Geotab's own figures.

Most fleets never deal with Geotab head office. They get their devices, installation, setup and support from a Geotab partner. Geotab's lineup splits into hardware that collects data, software that shows it, and a catalogue of add-ons that extends both. The names below are the ones a fleet manager hears in the first month.

Geotab's product page says the GO device reports location, speed, engine idling, distance and engine health, and monitors equipment status such as PTO, driver seatbelt and cargo door in real time. It uses a 4G LTE modem, has native Bluetooth to locate nearby asset tags, and keeps a built-in energy reserve that sends a tamper alert if power is cut.

Geotab says a harness is required for installation. The GO10 connects at the OBD-II or 9-pin diagnostic port through a T-harness, with no wires cut, and a 3-wire kit covers vehicles without a port. A fleet can install devices itself, but we always recommend a professional installer, because a clean install is what keeps the data reliable for years.

MyGeotab is Geotab's web-based fleet management software, which Geotab describes as a centralized view of your vehicle and driver data. It comes with a rules feature that is configured and ready for use, custom maps, reports you build and schedule, alerts for engine health issues, and in-vehicle driver feedback and coaching tools. Geotab says its ELD solutions are certified for US and Canadian regulatory standards, and the software is available in 17 languages, French among them.

MyGeotab is also an open platform. Geotab's SDK lets a company bring vehicle and location data into its own systems, which is how dispatch, payroll, maintenance and accounting tools connect to it. Geotab currently sells it in two plans, GO Core and GO, which set the features each device unlocks.

Geotab Drive is the driver app, and it runs on Android and iOS. Geotab describes it as a cloud-based ELD: drivers log their duty status for hours of service, complete the Asset Inspection workflow (the DVIR), read messages and use add-ins from the Marketplace, such as the Ruleset Switcher for drivers who change rulesets or Fuel Tracker for recording fill-ups.

For a carrier, Drive is the piece an inspector sees at roadside. Setting up the right ruleset for each driver, Canadian or US, is part of configuring MyGeotab, and it is one of the first things we check when we set up a new fleet.

The Geotab Marketplace is Geotab's catalogue of solutions built for MyGeotab, which Geotab calls the largest solutions ecosystem in telematics. Its categories include cameras and ADAS, and asset and trailer tracking, alongside software for fuel cards, dispatch, maintenance, compliance and reporting.

Marketplace solutions come in two kinds. An add-in is software that opens as a page inside MyGeotab or Geotab Drive. An add-on is hardware, such as a camera or an IOX module, that connects to the GO device. Some solutions carry their own charge, so check before you switch one on.
