Two Systems, Three Flows
Route optimization and GPS tracking are usually different products, even on one platform. What makes them one system is three flows of data between them. Downstream: the optimized plan goes to the driver's app and to the tracking platform, so the platform knows what each vehicle is supposed to be doing. Live: the vehicle's actual position and stop events flow back, so the plan can be checked against reality and re-planned. How the Integration Is Built
On an open telematics platform the integration is an API: the routing product reads vehicles, positions, trips and geofence events from the platform and writes planned routes and stop status back. Geotab's Marketplace is where routing products that already have that integration are listed, so a fleet can pick one that connects to its data without a project. The alternative — a routing tool with its own tracking, or a tracking tool with a routing module — avoids the integration by being one product, at the cost of taking that vendor's routing whatever its quality.
The right question for a vendor is which data the integration actually exchanges. 'Integrates with Geotab' can mean a full three-way flow or a nightly export of vehicle names. The table above is the checklist.
What Changes When It Works
The dispatcher stops toggling between two screens. A van behind schedule is seen on the same map as its plan, and the re-plan is one click. Stops are marked delivered by the geofence, not by a driver remembering to tap. The customer's arrival estimate is recalculated from the van's real position. And the plan gets better every week, because the optimizer is learning from what the fleet actually does rather than from a map's assumptions. Fleets that have both products un-integrated get the morning plan and none of that.
Choosing the Order
Choose the telematics platform first, because its data is what every other tool — routing, dispatch, maintenance, fuel — runs on, and its openness decides which of those tools you can connect. Then choose the routing product that integrates with it fully. A fleet that picks the routing tool first and the telematics second often ends up with the integration it can get rather than the one it wanted.
