What Is ADAS? Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in Fleet Vehicles and Dash Cams

ADAS is the umbrella term for the systems that watch the road for the driver: forward collision warning, lane departure, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, blind-spot detection. Some come built into the vehicle, some come from an AI dash cam. Here's what each does, how the two sources differ, and how a fleet uses the events.

The Term

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are the automated functions that perceive the road and either warn the driver or act on the vehicle: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, pedestrian and cyclist detection, and driver-monitoring for distraction and drowsiness. They are the layer below automated driving; the driver remains in control and the system assists. Heavy trucks in the US are moving toward mandatory automatic emergency braking, and most new light vehicles ship with several ADAS functions as standard.

Built-In Versus Camera-Based

Vehicle-integrated ADAS uses the manufacturer's radar and cameras and can act on the brakes and steering; the fleet gets whatever the vehicle came with and, through the GO device on supported models, a record of when the systems activated. Camera-based ADAS runs on an AI dash cam: it detects following distance, forward collision risk, lane departure, rolled stops and, from the driver lens, distraction and drowsiness, and it warns the driver but does not act on the vehicle. Its advantage is that it works on every vehicle in a mixed fleet regardless of age, and that every event comes with video.

What a Fleet Does With the Events

Each ADAS event — a forward collision warning, a lane departure, a distraction alert — is a data point on the driver's record. Aggregated per driver and normalized by distance, they are the leading indicators of collision risk, and coaching on them is what reduces the collisions that follow. The camera's in-cab warning is the immediate correction; the weekly review of events is the lasting one. Insurers increasingly ask whether a fleet runs ADAS-equipped cameras and how it uses the events.

A fleet buying new vehicles should specify the ADAS package that fits its operation and confirm the telematics device can read the activations.
